Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes

Carney won his third Hobart Wheelrace from four attempts and backed up later in the programme to close the carnival with victory in the A Grade Scratch. The Hobart Wheelrace - now in its 21st year - was always going to be won by a backman, especially when 12 out of the 17 riders in the final field were handicapped on less than 100m. "The Tasmanian Carnivals this series has been lean pickings for the backmen, so its nice to finish off with a major wheel," Carney said. The dual Hobart Wheel - A Grade Scratch wins for Carney also elevated the affable Yank to second position on the Sports Carnivals Association of Tasmania's official Order of Merit - for prizemoney won - behind Latrobe Wheel winner Damian Ladd, who won $8000 in one race alone. In the Hobart Wheel, Carney and his fellow scratchmen Darren Young and Nathan Clarke had plenty of help from just in front of them, while Hobart based rider Stephen Rossendell (50m), preferred to go it alone and without the required assistance was found wanting at the end, although he did hang on for second. Unassuming Ulverstone rider Stephen Pearce clinched third to add to his growing collection of minor placings in major wheelraces. Later in the day, Pearce caused a surprise win in the A Grade Points Score and then backed up to claim third in the A Grade Scratch. Former Tasmanian Robert Wilson, now riding out of the Footscray Cycling Club in Victoria, won the Sprint Derby and Devonport based cyclist Gareth Atkins hit top form to win the Keirin final. Winners of the Hobart junior wheelraces included Sean Oliver (J1), Alex Holden (J2) and Karissa Ling (J3). The Tasmanian cycling summer continues this Saturday (Jan. 11) with the Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club's annual carnival at Latrobe and then concludes with the final open track carnival at St Helens on Jan. 18. Cycling Tasmania will conduct its State Track Championships at the Launceston Silverdome in February.
