Friday Night Winter Track Racing

Dunc Grey Velodrome, June 7, 2002

Fifty-two riders with some from as far as Gunnedah, Western NSW, Newcastle, Canberra and Illawarra lined up for another great Friday night of track racing/development at the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome. Race Promoter, Kevin Young said he was extremely pleased with the support from riders for Friday Night Winter Track Racing with another 8 riders having their first rides and the domestic road season being in full swing with championship events also being held over the long weekend.

The outstanding rides of the evening came from Shaun Hopkins winning 4 from 4 and proving how much of a force track sprinters can be if they put in the hard yards on the road. Steve Fitzpatrick again rode strongly being pushed along this week by the up and coming riders of Michael Lewis (Newcastle MTB's) and Phillip Stokes (Penrith Panthers).

Sean Backers (Parramatta) made his debut in Division 2. Sean is a very much under-developed track sprinter who will no doubt emerge as a force in the coming 2002/2003 track season if he continues to ride as he did on Friday night. John Galvin (Gunnedah) made his presence felt in Division 3 with some outstanding rides during the evening. Finishing with 47 points has already lifted John to second place outright in Division 2. Steve Gilmore (Liverpool Leppington) and Clay Batt (St George) also rode strongly figuring in a number of finishes on the night.

With increased support from our Women riders two divisions were run this week. Tanya Newton (Bicisport) continues to improve with each ride in Division 1 finishing on 32 points ahead of Keely Mc Namarra (St George) and Leonie Burford (Parramatta). Lizzy Georgouris (Bicisport) laid down her claims with an across the line win in the points race surprising her fellow competitors with a blistering turn of speed over the last 250 meters.

Division 2 Women produced some exciting tactical racing from all riders in the field. Amanda Whiteman (Bicisport) continues to improve with each ride whilst Tundy Berryhill (Parramatta) continues to improve following her road win at Oatley Park the previous week. Catriona Owens (Bicisport) riding a smaller gear than her competitors continues to show some good early race speed whilst Kyle Spencer (Illawarra) showed a glimpse of what is to come finishing 3rd in the opening scratch race.

Next week will see the first of our Mini Madison's for Division 1 riders. This will be our feature event on the program and we are hoping for a record number of riders and spectators for next Friday night's carnival.
