Friday Night Winter Track Racing

Dunc Gray Velodrome, Bass Hill, May 31, 2002

51 riders lined up for another great Friday night of track racing/development at the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome. Race Promoter, Kevin Young said he was extremely pleased with the support from riders for Friday Night Winter Track Racing, particularly as last weekend there were three major road open events held.

Racing was once again fast with close finishes being the order of the night. 11 new riders faced the starter. Rebecca Borgo (Illawarra CC) had her first hit out in the Women's event as part of her preparation for the upcoming Junior World Track Championships to be held in Melbourne in July. Rebecca rode strongly winning the first event, however the endurance riders of Leonie Burford (Parramatta) and Keels McNamarra (St George) took control of events as the evenings races rolled on.

Mick Kejda (Illawarra) showed his class and tactical prowess to dominate in Division 3. Mick had the small but enthusiastic crowd on their feet with his constant close finishes in the point's race sprints. Geoff Worthington (Waratah Vets) and Craig Hopkins (Lidcombe) rode strongly for runners up points.

With Christopher Young (Parramatta) being elevated to Division 1, David Browne (Bicisport) was left to dominate Division 2, putting paid to sprinter David Willmott's (St George) chances of sweeping the slate. Newcomers Shane Wood (Macarthur Collegiens) and Steve Savage (Harlequin) rode strongly providing some close finishes for the minor placings.

Division 1 with a field of 12 lined up to greet the starter. A good mixture of endurance riders, sprinters and two promising U17 riders made for a night of exciting riding. Peter Fitzpatrick (St George) continues to find form having spent the past twelve months concentrating on his work whilst Brother Steve is relishing the Winter Racing format. Stuart Miller (Bicisport) continues to race aggressively accumulating 47 points after week 3 of competition. Young up and coming 16 year olds, Phillip Stokes (Penrith) and Chris Young (Parramatta) showed they will be a force in time to come, showing good speed in fighting out the minor placings in the points race sprints.

The format for next weeks racing will change slightly with a miss & out race replacing the teams race event. For further information telephone: Kevin Young Wk 9738 5850, Mob 0402 245062 or email Kevin Young
