Results and Reports for June 22-28, 2002AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday night winter track racing, week 7Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome, June 28, 2002Hopkins dominates on cold winter nightFNWTR, held on a cold winter's night in Sydney saw 50 riders front the starter for another great evening of track racing. With a number of our top division 1 endurance riders up country racing road events, this opened up an opportunity for our regular trackies to gain valuable points to secure their positions on the series points table. First to capitalise on Steve Fitzpatrick's absence in Division 1 was Shaun Hopkins (Parramatta). After his leanest week of the series last Friday night, Shaun was back to his brilliant best taking four wins from four starts putting him within striking distance of the number one position on the points ladder. Peter Fitzpatrick (St George) also took advantage of the absence of the young up and coming Junior riders (Phillip Stokes and Chris Young) lifting his total to 124 points and into fourth place just behind the ever-consistent Stuart Millar from the Bicisport Club. Roadies Brian Appleyard (Trek) and Chris Brown (Illawarra) both having their first start of the season served notice to our regular riders that they will be a force in our next Madison event scheduled for Friday night July 12. Division 2 saw David South again dominate with wins in the Miss and Out race, Italian Pursuit and equal third in the points race. His 35 points elevated him to a clear lead in the series points table ahead of the ever-consistent Mick Kejda (Illawarra) who is relishing the Winter Track racing. Jeff Smith (Penrith) showed his class in winning the points race staying away for several sprints to give him overall honours. He also rode a tactical race to be prominently placed in the miss and out race. Other eye-catching performances came from Paul Rowher (Harliqen), Andrew Grant (Southern Cross) and Glen Trudgett (Parramatta). Four new riders started in Division 3. It quickly became evident that Justin Worthington was under-graded as he executed a clean sweep of all events, amassing 50 points from his first night of racing. The remaining points were spread evenly amongs a number of riders with Clay Batt (St George) and Hugh Gray (Waratah Vets) marginally taking minor honours. There were insufficient women riders to race two divisions despite the Canberra girls making the long trek to Sydney. It was great to see Rebecca Ellis, one of AustraliaÕs top female sprinters in action scoring 30 points from her four starts. Keely McNamarra was the leading points earner on the night scoring a credible 36 points cementing her in second place on the pointÕs table. Sophie Cape continues to impress with each race scoring enough points to not only move her to division 1 but to also place her third outright on the points table. Other notable performances came from Angela Keys (Bicisport), Catriona Owens (Bicisport) and Kyle Spencer (Illawarra) who is reaping the benefits of her road training scoring a creditable 20 points on the night. Upcoming race programs include lengthened points race events and on Friday 12th July and the second of our Madison events which is sure to attract even more endurance riders particularly as there will be no Road events clashing over this weekend.
