Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track RacingDunc Gray Olympic Velodrome, August 23, 2002Blues Brothers combine to set up win in Wheelrace19 riders contested the division two Handle Bar Tavern Wheelrace on Friday night. In one of the fastest and most thrilling Wheelrace events held this season Blues brothers, Hugh and Jim Gray combined with Dennis Fahey (St George) to set a cracking pace from the outset not giving the backmarkers a chance of bridging the gap. Fahey having his first ride of the season rode strongly rounding up the front markers with 2 1/2 laps to go, tucked on his wheel were Jim Gray, Hugh Gray and Michael Popplewell. As they turned with 1/2 lap to go Hugh Gray launched with the support of his vast army of fans, launched his bid down the back straight, finally getting the better of Fahey in the finishing meters to record the narrowest of victories and a well deserved win. The dual between Gray and Fahey continued throughout the evening with both riders finishing with equal points and joint leaders in Division 2. Shaun Hopkins Parramatta was back to his brilliant best taking maximum points in Division 1 to be the first rider to earn more than 500 points for the season. Only 7 points separated the next five riders of Robert Upton, Phil Dixon, David Browne, Chris Young, Patrick Naughton and Grant Law. Division 3 saw a return to form by two our regular stalwarts in Geoff Worthington and Adam Christopher. 1 point separated the pair on the evening, Geoff getting the nod over Adam with a victory in the final Points race event to take top points by a solitary point - 43 to 42 points. Michael Thompson (Bankstown Sports CC) continues to impress winning the miss & out race and placing in two other events on the night. A small field of 8 contested the Women's events. Rebecca Ellis continues to show her class by taking maximum points once again moving her to within striking distance of a top 3 series finish. Sophie Cape (St George) showed grit and determination scoring 38 points moving her closer to Tanya Newton (Bicisport) 27 points and Sqeels McNamarra (St George) 17 points. Sqeels maintains her series leader position just ahead of Tanya Newton. Sandra Beaumont (Southern Highlands) rode strongly picking up 24 points moving her to the top of Division 2 Women. Next Friday night (30/8) promises to be one of our biggest nights this season with the return of many of our road riders with a break in the road calendar. Spectators are welcome. Racing starts at 7.10pm.
