Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Track Racing Week 12Dunc Gray Velodrome, August 2, 2002Stokes gives it some stickReport by Kevin Young Young 17 year old Phillip Stokes reigned supreme on Friday night winning the "Handle Bar Tavern 5 lap Wheelrace" and accumulating 59 points bringing him into contention for a podium finish in the end of series points table. Riding from the 55 meter mark, Stokes was quickly away putting added pressure on the scratch markers to bridge the gap. Despite a valiant effort by the back markers they failed in their bid to catch Stokes, with Steve Fitzpatrick and Shaun Hopkins taking the minor placings. Robert Upton (Harlequin) continues to show great form easily accounting for the opposition in the Division 1 points race and being up amongst the leaders in the progressive points race and miss & out race. Robert climbs from 9th to 7th place on the points table. Peter Fitzpatrick (St George) was also amongst the points accumulating 42 on the night to secure his 3rd placing overall on the point's series ladder. David South (Waratah Vets) was in top form in Division 2 scoring 48 points. David rode a well planned points race accounting for Peter Barnard (Southern Cross) and Jeff Smith (Penrith). He now moves into outright 2nd position on the points ladder. Scott Williams (Lidcombe) enjoyed his best night of the season scoring wins in the points race, Italian pursuit and finishing a close 2nd in the miss & out race. His tally of 47 points takes him to outright leader in division 2A. The Blues Bros. Jim and Hugh Gray (Waratah Vets) rode strategically all evening ensuring they placed in most races. Both have secured their top four placings in the series points table. Trevor Waite (Parramatta) reclaimed the series points lead in Divison 3 just edging out Peter Rafferty (St George) in a close contest for points. Andrew Richardson (Penrith) 31 points and Brian Newman (Parramatta) 30 points top scored with consistent rides across all events. Andrew, having his first ride on the track showed good speed and determination and will be a force in coming races. The Women's races were once again well supported with 14 starters racing in two divisions. Rebecca Ellis (Canberra) continues to show her class accumulating 60 points on the evening moving her to 4th placing on the series points ladder. Sophie Cape and Squeels McNamara (St George) continued their weekly battle with Cape gaining the upper hand on the night scoring 39 points to 31. Squeels now moves to outright series leader, just ahead of Tanya Newton (Bicisport) and Sophie Cape in 3rd placing. Three other riders elevated to Division 1, Amanda Whiteman (Bicisport), Angela Keys (Lidcombe) and Catriona Owens (Bicisport) rode strongly showing the depth NSW has in Women track cycling. Division 2 saw a return to form for Tunde (Gadget) Berryhill, who won the opening scratch race and continued with placings in the miss & out and points races. Gadget scored 30 points on the night to take the overall series points lead. Other notable performances came from Kyles Spencer (Illawarra) scoring her first win of the season in the miss & out race, Sandra Beaumont (Southern Highlands) second in the miss & out and a win in the Italian Pursuit event and Kelly - Anne Cox (Bicisport) accumulating 23 points on the night. Wendy Walker (WSMTB) and Leesa Carson (FIT) having their first rides on the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome rode strongly throughout the carnival.
