Less than an hour after his triumph in the Wheelrace, Tasmanian Darren Young was once again back marker for the night's other major event, the Sid Patterson Champion of Champions Wheelrace. The event brought together the place getters from the year's major Wheelraces, and was run over the traditional 2000 metres, designed to crown the best handicap rider in the country.

Deaf cyclist Reece Emmerson-Van Beek was the out marker with a 200 metre head start, with riders at fairly even intervals back to Young and his fellow Scratchman Todd Wilksch. From the start, it was apparent that the back markers had decided that co-operation was the only way to succeed, as they seemed to wait until Wilksch and Young had made up the deficit to the VIS pair of Brad Norton and Sanderson before noticeably turning on the afterburners!

In an awesome display, the back markers had the field contained with three laps still to travel, and without Young having had to face the wind. His fellow back markers were spent, however, and to spectators it appeared Young had hit the front too early. Nankervis made another bid for glory around the outside, but the defiant Young dug deep and kept his wheel in front all the way to the line for a gutsy win. New South Wales rider Brenton Crawley finished strongly to claim second position ahead of another Tasmanian, Matthew Goss.
