Lehigh Valley velodrome

Madison of the Americas, August 4, 2006

Lehigh Valley Velodrome hosted the first annual Madison of the Americas and it was some of the most exciting racing the track has seen all season! With 17 Madison teams, the field was stacked with awesome riders from all around the world. The crowd was pumped and the racing was outstanding!

The night started off with a full field of riders competing in a 15km Madison. The teams were working hard and despite the level of talent, there is a higher risk of a crash with so many riders on the track. In the heat of an exchange, Dave Wells and his partner Mark Gorman took each other down in turn one. No one was hurt and the race continued. Pete Fitzpatrick of Australia and his partner Argentine World and Olympic Team member Sebastian Donadio of Argentina, looked to be the likely winners, but the Argentine team of Leandro Botasso and Guido Palma did not make it easy for them. Botasso and Palma road their hardest but finished the race just behind Fitzpatrick and Donadio making for a very intense race.

Next in the program was the Women's 10 Lap prime race. Former junior world champion Sarah Uhl decided the win was more important than the cash primes and sprinted through the last lap and took first place just in front of Ashley Kimmet of Colavita/Bolla, who earned 8 points. Kim Geist of Victory Brewing Co. pro team took third place with 6 points.

Not having much time to rest, the men were up next for the Team Super Sprint which was turned into a traditional elimination. With such a large field of teams again, it was treacherous to drop out of the middle of the race if your partner was eliminated from the back. Fortunately no one was injured in the one crash that took place on the back straight with Fuji's Bill Short and Northern California's Giovanni Rey. Crossing the finish line first was the favored team of the night Fitzpatrick and Donadio with Jackie Simes and Ryan Oelkers finishing in a very close second.

The women took the track next for the One Mile Scratch Final. Sarah Uhl once again took the win as she swung up around Ashley Kimmet coming out of turn two and blazing to the finish line. The competition was fierce with Veronica Martinez and May Britt Hartwell not far behind Kimmet.

Following the women's race, the Madison teams got together for the One Lap Time Trials. Mike Beers and Dave Clinger seemed like the team to beat with a time of 19.2 seconds, but when Botasso and Palma took to the track it was all over for Beers and Clinger. Palma slung his partner into the sprint and Botasso took off on fire! The two Argentines placed first with an astounding time of 18.72 seconds.

The final women's event of the evening was a 10km Points Race. With a field of world class women riders, this event was sure to be a crowd pleaser. The women left their sweat on the track and gave the crowd the show they were hoping for. Ashley Kimmet gained the lead coming out of turn three in the last lap and took the win leaving Kim Geist in second and Sarah Uhl in third.

Up next was the last men's Madison event of the night, the 30km Madison, and it was a show stopper! The teams road their hardest for 90 laps and held a practically flawless performance. The Argentine duo of Botasso and Palma gave Fitzpatrick and Donadio a run for their money, but in the end, it was Fitzpatrick and Donadio that would take a very hard earned win. Botasso and Palma finished second and the team of Guy East and Dave Wiswell took third place. It was surely a great way to end an exciting night of racing.

Don't miss this Friday night's annual Air Products Finals featuring the Artie Greenburg Memorial 10 mile race! Watch world class riders from around the globe battle it out in a heart pounding competition. In conjunction with the pros, the top participants in the Air Products Community Program will have their chance to put their skills to the test as they race one another in the finals!
