Riverland Cycling Club

Renmark, South Australia, November 20, 2005

The first of the Riverland Cycling Club's Track Racing sessions was held in Renmark on Sunday, with several different types of races conducted.

A Heartstarter over 20 laps of the 510m track was held first, with riders slowly gathering pace as they warmed up and increased in confidence. The last lap saw Lara MacKirdy lead the bunch out, with riders swarming over her at the 200m sprint line. Lee Stevens and scratchman Hamish MacKirdy had a close 1st and 2nd placing, with Angelo Ylia claiming 3rd.

The main race of the day, a 1500m Handicap, saw Hamish MacKirdy and Stevens dominate again, with their precise timing allowing them to make the most of the bunch draft before firing past to the sprint line.
A B-Grade race was held over 10 laps, with riders working well together until the last lap sprint line. Bob Pankhurst executed a superb manoeuvre to box Amanda Steele in, before she dug deep to charge past the other riders. Pankhurst claimed the race in a photo finish with Steele, while John Eshman claimed 3rd.

An A-Grade race was held over 15 laps, with riders again working well and keeping together until the last lap, when Hamish MacKirdy and Stevens fired off to sprint at the 200m line. MacKirdy's experience and strength saw him claim 1st.

The last race of the day, a 3000m Handicap saw Angelo Ylia and Amanda Steele group up and merge with Josh Steele and John Eshman. This group worked together to increase their overall speed, and were nearly on the home straight before being caught and over-run by Stevens and Hamish MacKirdy. MacKirdy, who has an incredibly powerful sprint, notched up another win.

Next Sunday's race will be a road race at Loveday, starting at 8:45am. There will be a Criterium at Monash starting at 6:15pm on Tuesday and track training Thursday night at 6pm. All interested road/track cyclists are welcome.
Goodluck to Hamish MacKirdy who races at the State Open Track Championships next weekend.
