Friday Night Winter Track Racing
Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, July 1, 2005
The feature race of the night was the Ivan Colig at Mortgage Maker 1.5km wheel Race worth $250 for the win. The scratch group started well catching the Div 2 riders very quickly but faultered at this point and had no further influence on the outcome. Kaarle McCullock from St George had left the lead group to make her bid for the victory and look strong before hitting the last 500m and faded dramatically as her teammate Peter Rafferty took over control of the lead. With teeth grit Rafferty rode hard over the last 500m to win by a mere 1m over the fast finishing Matt Brown. Ivan Colig was on hand to make the presentation and was proud that his team mate had won the prize.
The remainder of the night was jam packed with nearly 40 events ran through out the night. The sprint round taught some riders a few important lessons:
1. You can't ride on a 42 degree bank at 5km/h
2. You can't ride on the flat in a corner at 50km/h
I guess some people need to test out these basic laws of friction before they believe them.
With just over 80 riders in attendance and my main helper in hospital it was a hectic night for result keeping. Please don't hesitate to let me know of any errors in the results. I will be exploring ways to make the racing more enjoyable to cater for the larger than expected numbers. Division 5 is here to stay.
