Friday Night Winter Track Racing week 7

Dunc Grey Velodrome, July 30, 2004

Scarfe takes feature race in big turn-out night

By Paul Craft

The atmosphere was electric with one of the biggest roll-up of riders that FNWTR has witnessed. In addition to this, the spectator patronage was also higher than normal with a little under 3000 empty seats in the house.

The feature race for night was "The Div 1 Team Alex 1km Wheelrace". First prize was an ultra-light weight carbon fibre seat post valued at over $200. Two very fast Australian Champions, Barnard and Harding had a lot of work to do if they were going to make it to the front of the 20 rider strong field. A mishap by Sarah White (95m) ruined her chances as she hit the handler in front of her. The big mover was Matt Smith (60m) who overcame Leanne Manderson (105m) with two laps remaining. It looked like Smith would walk away with the big prize, but unfortunately for him fatigue set in with 200m to go just as Dale Scarfe (70m) turned on the gas to take an impressive victory.

Ironically Scarfe had only recently purchased a Team Alex Carbon road frame which he is very impressed with. The new seat post will be a fitting addition. You can view this amazing prize and other quality items on www.teamalex.com.au . Team Alex are the importers of top end racing equipment and have a wide range of racing frames, wheels and carbon accessories.

The Novice Grade is proving to be a great success. With first time trackies getting a taste of competitive racing in a relaxed atmosphere. Several riders (Jason Roberts, Richard Lang and Luke Taylor) have graduated from this division becoming the dominant riders in div 4 and look like they are ready to step up to div 3.

Fnwtr tried to help out the Australian Olympic selectors, by running the Italian Pursuit in Round 3. This is very similar to the team sprint (Olympics) just with a lot more riders. 6 teams of 11 riders did battle in 2 up heats with the slower riders building the pace early with the team getting faster and faster as we worked our way to the div 1 anchor riders. After the race a thorough check of the velodrome revealed that there was not a syringe to be found. We will be submitting our nominations to the AOC for the inevitable vacant positions later this week.

FNWTR has offered the Australian Paralympics Tandem teams an opportunity to hone their match sprinting skills. David Short, Janelle Lindsey and Lindy Hou who are all on the road to Athens showed why they are the best in the world with an impressive display of skill and speed over a two race series.

The Madison racing was top quality. However there was no denying the class of the Hopkins/Fitzpatrick team. Between them they have 3 current Australian titles. They were however challenged by Stokes/Jewell. It was great to see Mark Jewell racing hard again and Phil Stokes was unlucky not to be selected for Junior World's team to ride the Madison .

The night went a little over time and the cancellation of the final Div3 and 4 combine was regrettable. Although the final race of the night was a spectacle worthy of its billing. The NSWCF+NSWIS Time Blaster is a race over 30 laps, every fortnight with $50 on offer for the winner, so long as they beat the record time. If the riders fail to better the time, the cash Jackpots. This week the time blaster was won for the second time by promising first year U19 rider Anthony Bennett, in a time of 9 minutes 25 seconds (47.8km/h). This eclipsed the previous time by 11 seconds and scored the talented young rider $50. The "Time Blaster" will be on again in one fortnight's time and will once again be worth a mere $50 for the winning rider who can beat 9min 25sec.

Next week will feature the amazing roller-derby which will see two riders do battle on the rollers over 500m. Entry fee is $5 to generate some prize money. Drop us a line if you want to give it a go. All are eligible.

The finals of the fascinating roller-derby will be in the Handle Bar Tavern at 9:30pm

Quote of the night, Alex Simmons: "I just saw Phil Stokes ride through Anthony Bennett's rear wheel, come out the other side and not fall."
