Friday Night Winter Track Racing Week #11

Dunc Grey Velodrome, Sydney, August 27, 2004

By Paul Craft

Participants and patrons alike experienced a fantastic night of top class racing, with a few laughs along the way.

The feature race for the night was "The Div 2 ZeroRH 1km Wheelrace". Cycling Projects representative Felice brought along 3 pairs of ZeroRH sunglasses for the top 3 place getters of this prestigious race. With the prize pool now exceeding $600, the anticipation for the 1km Wheelrace could be felt by both spectators and competitors. The handicaps for this race were extremely tight with Roland Lang off Scratch and Hugh Gray off limit at a mere 75m. Immediately after the start, two bunches formed. By the end of the third lap it was all together with Graham McClymont (40m) leading out the mass sprint. In a dramatic final lap Adelaide sprint star Gavin White muscled his way to the front ahead of Matt Smith and Jason Roberts.

Felice from Cycling Projects was on hand to proudly present the prizes. ZERORH is the fastest growing sunglasses brand in Italy. The Fassa Bortolo team including Alessandro Petacchi use ZERORH+ sunglasses together with the "Lion King" Mario Cipollini. Visit ZeroRH+ at www.zerorh.com

The third round Divisional Italian Pursuits brought out some fantastic team efforts. However it was the Division 2 race that ended in controversy. Coming into the final lap Alex Simmons had a slender lead over Roland Lang. Miraculously, Simmons seemed to experience some form of mechanical difficulty and slowed dramatically. It was quickly determined that Simmons had just given up out of sheer exhaustion. After a threat of throwing the visibly shaken Simmons out of the Velodrome, a disgusted team mate Ross Harding grabbed the Microphone to state "I just want to make one thing clear, there was no mechanical difficulty, and there was no broken seat. There were 8 of us in that team and only 7 of us doing the job!" We are sure to hear more about this controversy in coming weeks.

On the tails of Australia's success in the Olympic Madison, FNWTR's monthly Madison was an unbelievably fast display of skill and prowess. The 7 teams showed no respect to each others wellbeing in setting a 50+km/hr pace from the early stages. The duo of Hopkins/Spencer scored the victory, however they were forced to chase the attacking teams of McLaughlin/ Dixon and Mellish/ Bennett.

In a night that had so many highpoints the final race topped them all. The NSWCF+NSWIS Time Blaster is a fortnightly race for a cash prize so long as they beat the previous record. This week the record stood at 9min 25 sec and the cash prize was up to $100. The majority of the contenders had just ridden an exhausting Madison and came in to this race a little drained from previous activities. After 10 laps the intact bunch was 3 seconds down on the target schedule. After 20 laps the bunch was depleted to just 4 riders however they were now 3 seconds up on the schedule. With 4 laps remaining the young Justin Tomlinson cracked followed by Phil Dixon 1 lap later. This left two promising U19 riders, Bennett and Spencer, to battle the clock and each other for the $100. In the final lap, the two visibly distressed riders challenged each other for the victory, however it was Bennett who could suffer the most and hang on to take the victory in a time of 9minutes and 10 seconds at an amazing average of 49.1km/hr

Next week, as is every week at FNWTR, is one not to miss. The feature wheelrace for Div 3 will be sponsored by the super fast hand-made Velofex tyres. This wheelrace will reveal the next 3 qualifiers of the final night 1.5km handicap. Round 3 will include the always popular 1 lap drag race, 270m of explosive power.

Hope to see ya there.
