Friday Night Winter Track Racing Week #10

Dunc Grey Velodrome, Sydney, August 20, 2004

FNWTR more popular than Olympics

By Paul "More popular than Tony Squires" Craft

It's official! There are as many, if not more, spectators at FNWTR than there are at the Athens Olympic Rowing venue.

The feature race for night was "The Div 1 Veloflex 1km Wheelrace". Up for grabs was a pair of Veloflex clinchers along with products from Campagnolo and Cycling Projects. Again this week the handicap belonged to the limit markers. Although scratch-man Shaun Hopkins did well to catch the middle markers, it seemed that no one from this group was interested in towing Hoppy to victory. Michael Poppelwell was the hare of the race, exploding from the start to give the rest of Div 1 someone to chase. Two distinct groups had formed behind Poppelwell with the back markers forming at about 30m behind the middle markers. From the latter group three riders emerged for a dramatic sprint to the line. The track smarts of David Browne emerged the victor as he took a tactically supreme victory over Canberra's Daniel Ellis and team-mate Patrick Bolan.

Felice from Cycling Projects was on hand to proudly present the prizes. Veloflex makes the best tubulars and clincher tyres for your competition. Handmade with selected raw materials, one by one. Visit Veloflex at www.veloflex.it

The round 3 Sprint derby threw up a few surprise victories with a massive display of track tactics mixed with sheer power and speed. Div 4 winners included Richard Lang, Chris Murray and the Canberra pocket rocket Chloe Hosking. Of these riders Richard and Chris have proven that they are ready for Div3.

Div 3 overcame an early fall to tally up 3 victors, Gavin White, David McMaster and Alan Townsend.

The div 2 sprint derby was hotly contested with the honours going to Roland Lang, Graham McClymont and the always competitive Jimmy Gray.

Div 1 put on a fantastic display of speed revealing Patrick Bolan, Shaun Hopkins and Daniel Ellis to be the fastest.

Racing FNWTR this week was Skye Lee Armstrong, who was fresh from the Junior World titles in LA, where she won a silver medal to contribute to Australia's massive medal haul. Skye suffered in the winner's race, along with the majority of the div 2 field. The Final of this race blew to pieces with only two riders contesting the finish. On the line Roland Lang proved too powerful for Justin Tomlinson.

Next week will include the NSWCF + NSWIS Time Blaster which is worth $100 to the rider who can win in a time under 9 min 25 seconds. To add to the excitement will be the nights feature race "The ZeroRH sunglasses 1km wheelrace for div 2". ZeroRH sunglasses are worn by top European sprinters Mario Cipolini and Alessandro Petacchi. Till next week don't stop pedaling. Paul
