Clarke looking strong

From Rod Morris

Tasmanian scratchman Nathan Clarke is edging his way to top form on the eve of the Basslink Christmas Carnivals Series.

Clarke, who has a Hobart Wheel under his belt is desperate to add a hometown Latrobe Wheel to his trophy cabinet and if his performances at Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club level is any indication, that dreamed may yet be realised next month.

Clarke was the dominant rider at MVDCC track racing this week, winning the Senior Points Score Cub Championship, which was on top of the Elimination title he won seven days prior.

He also won the warm-up 10-lap scratch and the closing pursuit scratch and in the tough 3000 m handicap, finished a credible fourth behind former World Junior Champion, Mark Jamieson, who won in a photo finish from the in-form Ben Price.

Junior track racing saw newcomer Brandon Stewart, Ben Fielding and Jason Bounday continue their good form of late.

The following night, the MVDCC conducted a road race at Forth, where Stephen Pearce hit out with 4 km remaining and was never headed in the closing sprint to the line.

Ben Price won the corresponding B Grade race and is almost certain to be elevated to A Grade next week.

The MVDCC will transfer its December 9 track racing to the nearby Latrobe ground while repairs to the Devonport Oval bike track are undertaken.

The MVDCC is also expected to announce some exciting news regarding the Devonport Trial Wheel shortly.
