Experience over youth as Garley wins A Grade Omnium

By Mal Sawford

An afternoon which touched 40 degrees kept the numbers low for the second of Carnegie Caulfield's weekly track race meetings. The fast plexi-pave surface reflects the heat back at riders, with one rider comparing the conditions to riding in a convection oven!

The A Grade scratch race was taken out by Hayden Mead (O'Mara Cycles), with a strong sprint from 300 meters out. Mead opened a gap that even the phenomenal speed of Junior Australian Champion Shane Perkins could not close. Mike Goldie took out the B Grade race, leaving his effort a lot later to pass the leaders in the home straight.

Perkins got his revenge in the Sprint Derby, winning both his heat and the final by many lengths. Greg Nicholson won the B Grade Derby, after qualifying as the luck loser from the heats. The youngster took a flyer two laps from home in the final and held on to take the win from a fast finishing Goldie.

Former European professional Doug Garley (Terry Hammond Cycles) rode a strong tactical race in the A Grade Elimination, benefiting from the early pace setting by Jeremy Childs (Croydon Cycleworks) and deaf cyclist Reece Van Beek. His wile was no match for Caulfield Cup on Wheel winner Jonathan Nunan (Team MG-ZT), who was too strong in the final sprint. Mick Buckley thrived in the heat, recording his first win in the B Grade event.

The afternoon closed with an epic 50 lap Points Score at the height of the afternoon heat. Only five of the starters finished on the leading lap, with the event taken out by a dominant Garley. His early attack with Childs saw the pair clear leaders, before the heat took its toll on the Footscray rider. After the remnants of the field regrouped in the middle stages, Garley attacked again solo to take out the final four sprints and run out a clear winner.

The victory was enough to give Garley the overall win on the day, from Perkins, Mead and Nunan, while the B Grade Omnium went to the consistent Goldie over Buckley and Bill Prosser.
