George Town Carnival/Cycling Tasmania Rider of the Year Update

In a bold effort to regain his handicap of scratch, Devonport rider Gareth Atkins won the George Town Wheelrace in fine style at the weekend (December 6). Atkins, a winner of the 1992 Launceston Wheel, two St Helens Wheels and a Rosebery Wheelrace, is showing solid form on the eve of the Basslink Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals.

Riding from a generous 40 m handicap, Atkins was forced to work overtime to hold fellow Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club teammates, Mark Jamieson (40 m) and Kaidan Homan (140 m), in a tough sprint finish. Ideal conditions at the George Town Carnival promoted good racing and Atkins proved to be the star of the show.

Aside of winning the George Town Wheelrace for the second time - his first was in 1995 and third if you count a junior title when he was 11-years-old - Atkins also won the 1000 m Lightning Handicap and finished second to Nathan Clarke in the A Grade Scratch, which was raced at an extremely quick pace, courtesy of two $25 lap prizes, which were won by Karl Menzies and Kaidan Homan.

In the Lightning Handicap, Atkins had solid support out the back, with Nathan Clarke, Brendan Geale and Matt Goss riding in unison. The Open Keirin final was an all-class affair with Clarke winning from Goss and Daniel Cuting. Clarke was timed at 12.34 seconds for the last 200 m, with Menzies, Gareth Atkins and former world junior individual pursuit champion Mark Jamieson missing the first three placings.

A group of Queensland State junior track team members competed at the George Town Carnival, with Courtney Lelay, taking the spoils in the Women's Invitation Handicap and finishing third to Will Robinson and Ben Laskey in the Junior 1 Wheelrace. MVDCC stars Brenden Sutton and Brandon Stewart won the Junior 2 and Junior 3 George Town Wheelraces respectively.

The Tasmanian track carnivals schedule will now enjoy a week's break before action heads to the States\'s rugged West Coast for the annual Rosebery Carnival on December 20.

Cycling Tasmania Rider of the Year Update

Tasmanian scratchman Nathan Clarke has taken the early lead in the third annual Cycling Tasmania Rider-of-the-Year award for the 2003-04 track carnivals.

Clarke has recorded four wins, a second and a third at the three carnivals held to date, West Park, Devonport and George Town and boasts a 4-point lead over his Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club teammate, Gareth Atkins.

Clarke won both the PCCCT Wheelrace and Lightning Handicap at the West Park Carnival and has followed with successive A Grade Scratch wins at Devonport and George Town. Previous winners of the CT award have included American Jame Carney (2001-02) and Burnie's Michael Johnson (2002-03).

The award is based on all scratch races and handicap finals, offering the first four riders, 5-3-2-1 points and concludes at the season-ending St Helens Carnival in mid-January.

Ulverstone teenager Ben Price is currently third on 11 points, but missed the Devonport Carnival when he was in Victoria competing in the Melbourne Cup on Wheels meeting. Clarke is also leading Cycling Tasmania's Order of Merit for prize money won. The Latrobe rider has currently amassed $550 and is narrowly ahead of Atkins, who has earned $515.

Cycling Tasmania also recognises junior riders and Acacia Hills cyclist Daniel Jamieson is the early leader, 2-points clear of Launceston's Tom Robinson, with Clay Murfett and Will Robinson a further 3-points away in equal third. In the Junior OOM, Junior 1 scratchman Will Robinson is a clear leader with $155 won from three carnivals to date.
