Risi and Stam go out sick, Keisse and Bartko hold the lead
By Laura Weislo in Gent
The penultimate day of the Gent six-day should have been a barn-burner. Favorites
Iljo Keisse and Robert Bartko started the night just 48 points ahead of Bruno
Risi and Leif Lampater, and along with Isaac Galvez and Juan Llaneras, one lap
ahead of Danny Stam and Peter Schep. But after the opening points race, it was
clear that something was wrong - Risi and Stam's teams just weren't their usual
speedy selves.
During the next event, the team elimination, the two were the first to drop
out. Risi's team pulled out a decent flying lap, but Stam and Schep, after pulling
out nine second laps all week could only manage a 9.84. When the teams rolled
out for the Madison, only eleven teams took to the track. Apparently Risi and
Stam were suffering from the flu, and tried sleeping in until just before the
race in an attempt to recover, but could not continue.

The Spanish Madison world champions, Galvez and Llaneras, took advantage of
the absence of the second and fourth place teams to solidify their position
in the standings. The pair laid down multiple attacks which only Keisse/Bartko
and Marvulli/Aeschbach could follow. The team of Muller and Grassman seem to
be finding their legs as the event goes on, and were able to follow Marvulli
and Aeschbach on every attack, and landed a fourth place. It now seems as if
the local hero Iljo Keisse will get his second successive win in this event,
much to the delight of the crowds, but the riders would likely have it settled
in the race, rather than due to riders dropping out.
The racing was stopped after a crash in the second Madison. Dimitri DeFauw
and Isaac Galvez collided, sending the Spaniard into a balustrade. Galvez was
taken to the hospital unconsicous, and racing was suspended indefinitely.

The German teams of Arends/ Mohs and Kalz/ Kluge continue to dominate the event,
but are now battling each other in the finals. The British pair Burke and Bellis,
and the Czech duo Subrt and Mixa were the diligent and tried to follow the German
teams, but the speed of the top two wore them down over the course of the event,
and by the end, few could follow. The Dutch team Lighthart and Vermeulen along
with the Danes Morkov and Rannieres did well to hold onto the same lap as the
Czech and British teams, and the Dutch were successful in winning points.
Coming into the final sprint, the two German teams were on equal laps, with
Arends and Mohs up on points due to some very pro-active riding early in the
race, and they were on their way to winning the final sprint when a botched
exchange forced Mohs to ride the last four laps on his own, giving Kluge the
easy win on the final sprint. Arends and Mohs held their lead on points by three.
