Friday night winter track racing
Week 3, Dunc Grey Velodrome, Sydney, June 30, 2006
By Paul Craft
One of the coldest nights ever at FNWTR had competitors rugging up in between
races.
As always, the Junior's demonstration race kicked off the night. The demonstration
which is always entertaining, was especially so this week. The race was won
by Will Power until he was promptly relegated for taking a short cut. The video
replay in the Handle Bar Tavern post-race had the crowd cheering as they relived
Will's short lived moment of glory.
The feature race for the night was "The Velosportz + Innova-tech 1km wheelrace"
for division 3. Martin Millwood was our scratch man with a lot of work to reel
in limit at 100m however, an over eager push start had Martin passing Bill Laing
at 10m as the whistle was blown for the start. The commissaire wisely allowed
the race to continue. Out front, Cass Kell (80m) also started fast but not due
to a jump start but instead due to sheer power. Cass launched and within 50m
of the start had hit the front with a clean set of wheels. Her lead increased
as she hurtled herself around the track until 1 lap to go where she folded quicker
than an Italian striker in the penalty box. This left the door open for Andrew
Herehen and Jackson Law who battled each other all the way to the line. Andrew
held off the late challenge from the young Illawarra rider to win an impressive
victory.
A new rider to FNWTR is Bill Laing who had his first taste of Dunc racing last
week in Div 4. After winning a race last week he decided to move up a division
to Div 3. Bill's results for the night were two wins, two second places and
a non place in the handicap off 10m's. Bill clearly has a decent turn of speed
so watch out when he learns some tactics.
Round 4's Madi-lead again proved to be a highlight of the night. In this race
a Madison team acts as a derny performing changes in front of the bunch and
building in speed as the race progresses. This is a great opportunity for riders
to learn a little about Madison changes and how to follow one. The last change
by the team is done with about 7 laps to go and is a full bore attack. The riders
struggle to hold the slipstream of the lead rider until 5 laps to go where the
Madison riders pull out of the race, leaving a decimated field to complete the
last 5 laps.
The Div 2 Madi-lead saw Damien McGarry as the only rider to be able to hold
onto the final devastating attack. With 5 laps to go Damien found himself 70m
in front of a chase group of 5 riders. Damien from this point suffered his way
to a painful victory with World Champion Master Keith Oliver picking up the
scraps for second place.
Division 1 had a slightly different program for the night with round 3 being
the first ever 200m fly. This ran extremely smoothly with all riders bar one
being ready to start as the previous rider was finishing. Well done guys! Shaun
Hopkins laid down the early fastest time however it was Kial Stewart on the
come back trail that stole the victory.
Division 1 then backed up for a Madison. The strongest team was clearly Tomlinson
and Herman who repeatedly attacked the field, consistently blowing teams out
the back however, the smartest team was Hopkins and Roberts who controlled their
bursts of power to contain Tomlinson/Herman and easily out-sprinted them on
the final lap. Huge compliments go to the Carver / Law duo. Both of the U/17's
rode well above their years to continuously scramble back to the lead riders
and they even managed to sprint home for second place ahead of the fancied Tomlinson/Herman
team
The final race of the night was the "The CNSW Maersk Logistics Time Blaster
Challenge". Unfortunately due to the considerable effort put into the Madison
by our Div 1 riders, the 9 minutes 09 seconds barrier was never really challenged.
In the end Justin Tomlinson (the endurance King) finished alone in a time of
9 minutes 18 seconds. This means the $100 jackpots making the next time blaster
worth $200.
