Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday night winter track racingDunc Grey Velodrome, week 5, July 14, 2006Junior Development kicked off the night with young Brendan sporting his favorite riders, favorite jersey, that of course is Robbie McEwen and the green sprinters jersey. Just like his hero, Brendan stayed hidden till one lap to go where he started a side by side drag race with Tom Boonen (William). In the front straight Boonen mentally cracked and McEwen cruised home. The feature race of the night was the Rocky Pt Rd Cycles 1.25km Wheelrace, featuring division 1. First prize was a Dura-ace Track Sprocket set valued at nearly $300. For Once we had a clean start, with all riders and more importantly holders waiting till the whistle blew. All eyes were on the scratch-man Kial Stewart who immediately showed his class by crossing the initial gap to join the rest of the back markers. Up front it was Stuart Lane who was making the most of his 120m handicap employing the tactic of "go hard and don't look back". This tactic worked well for the first four laps however the last lap was not for the Bicisport rider. Seeing the demise of Stuart the crowd's attention turned back to Kial who was at the back of a long train. At this point Kial's brother Joel launched his final lead out for his superstar sibling, with 200m to go Joel (Kial's Brother) noted that he had no-one on his wheel and correctly chose to go into hammer time. Joel (Kial's Brother) looking resplendent in his black and blue Canberra skin suit showed that fast twitch fibers run in the family as he sprinted over the top of Andrew Herrmann and Geoff Hopkins with almost a meter to spare. One of the many great points about FNWTR is the amount of riders that it introduces to the exhilarating fun that is track racing. This week we signed on 11 first timers, 7 of which had never ridden track previously. Division 5 is the perfect introduction for these riders. This week we had 14 riders sign up for this division so it was necessary to split the grade into two fields. The idea of this division is to introduce riders to the Dunc Gray Velodrome and all its tricks. It is not necessarily the slowest grade, just the grade with the least riders and simplest races. Thus riders can learn how to race with room to breath. This week was of course the second Friday of the month which means the Derny comes out to play. Many thanks to Alex Simmons, who rode the derny for 17 races with no complaints (which is a compliment). Round 3's Kierins were as exciting as they always are but it was round 4's Miss'n' out point scores that excited the field and the crowd. This is an amazing tactical race that has to be ridden to be completely understood. Last Friday's program will be repeated again in week 11 on August 11. The CNSW, Maersk Logistics Time Blaster is a Fortnightly event that excites the riders and the audience to equal levels. This week the magic time to beat was 9minutes and 09 seconds. After the first 10 laps of the 30 lap event the peloton was down by 2 seconds on the record time. After the next 10 laps they had dropped 1 more second to be 3 seconds down. However in the final 10 laps three riders consecutively sacrificed themselves to ensure that the remaining 2 riders had an adequate shot at the $200 prize. The final two riders, Richard Vollegbregt and J-L Rathbone buried themselves as the count down begun on the final lap. J-L came around Richard in the final straight with a well timed sling from the lead rider to win the race. The crowd fell silent as it waited for the official time. 8 minutes 08.87 seconds! Amazingly J-L had won the $200 by 0.13 of a second. That final push by Richard made the difference. J-L was extremely humble in his acceptance speech, thanking all that had contributed to the 49.2km average speed and was only too happy to split the prize money equally with the final 4 riders.
