Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track RacingDunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, July 15, 2005I continue to be impressed by the wonderful variety of riders FNWTR attracts. Amongst the 70+ competitors were first time track riders, roadies, hard core trackies, former world champions, Olympic champions and even current World Champions. The class of this field was never more evident than when I made reference to the 'World Champion' and no less than six competitors raised their heads, thinking I was commenting about them. It was also great to see so many riders from Canberra escaping the bitter cold nights of the capital to enjoy the relative warmth of the indoor Velodrome. Round 1 warm up scratch races With several tandem riders available, the first half of these races ran like a motor pace with the second half exploding into a standard scratch race. With the added pressure of the top 4 place getters qualifying for the Hillbrick wheelrace in round 2, you could hardly describe the races as a warm up. Div 4 was marred with a fall late in the race. Fortunately nobody was seriously hurt however, it did force a restart to the event, much to the disappoint of Darren Kelly who had a healthy lead when the incident occurred. Central Coast riders made there intentions clear when they placed 1,2,3 in the Div 3 event. Alex Bird and Kial Stewart won their first of many events for the night. Round 2 The Hillbrick Racing Frames 1.5km Wheelrace Paul Hillbrick was on hand to promote the forthcoming Goulburn to Sydney and of course show his continued support of cycling in this country. He brought along with him a pair of Miche Compact cranks as first prize (Value $300) for this prestigious event. The four riders from each division lined up in their groups with their respective handicaps; Div 1 - scratch, Div 2 - 80m, Div 3 - 130m, Div 4 - 180m and Div 5 - 210m. All riders worked hard to try and get their group to the finish first however, with 1.5 laps remaining the situation was that Div 3 had swept up all in front, Div 2 were struggling 20m behind whilst Div 1 working hard together were about to pass Div 2. Kial Stewart who himself had done a significant amount of work, attacked hard for the victory. He flew past the leading group so fast that they all caught a cold! Brad Craft and Mitch Pearson tried hard to match his speed but in the end 'Try' was all they could do. Round 3 1 lap Screamers Alex Bird won his 4 up heat in a blistering fast 20.83 seconds. The division 1 riders were left scratching their heads as the subsequent heats all failed to set a faster time. It was left up to the 5th heat when Kial Stewart once again showed his class by showing off with 19.85 seconds averaging 50.8km/h including the standing start. Round 4 Snowballs The most interesting ride of the night was completed by ACT rider Matthew Meisel-Dennis who broke away early to accumulate 65 points. Despite being caught and holding a mathematically unassailable lead over his rivals, Matthew continued to race hard in an attempt to stop anyone else scoring any points. Even on the last lap when most would be happy to allow the remaining peasants of div 2 to have some crumbs of points he was still sprinting hard against Jason Roberts for the final points much to the delight and some disbelief of the crowd. Round 5 Combines + CNSW Time Blaster The target for the time blaster was set three weeks ago by Michael Mellish at a respectable 9 min 23 seconds. This week the field showed no respect to each other covering the first 10 laps well in excess of 50km/h. This basically left only 4 riders of the once 22 strong field. A couple of laps later it was down to three, Jason Austin, Peter Spencer and Justin Tomlinson. Justin impressed many including his dad (Commissaire) by taking a well deserved victory. Throughout the night we were treated to the magnificent display of tandem sprinting, which included Olympic champion Lindy Hou.
