Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track RacingDunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, August 12, 2005By Paul Craft Friday night was a night of records; firstly it was the record coldest night in 20 years. Secondly it was the record lowest turn out of riders for 2005 with 65 entrants. Were the two records related? The feature race of the night was the Veloflex Tyres 1km wheel race for div 1. Even before this race had begun all interest was directed towards Canberra's Kial Stewart who had the prestigious starting mark of -30m. That's 30m behind scratch. This is the equivalent to a Hors category climb. Hors meaning outside categorisation The race itself turned into the Kial Stewart show. From the start Kial quickly
crossed the 40m gap to Patty Bolan and then he found his position in the long
train of riders that by the end of lap two were almost all together. On the
bell lap Kial had positioned himself within striking distance of the lead and
with 150m to go he hit the front turning on the speed that we have come to expect
from the ACT flash to take a clear victory. Current duel Master's World champion
David Willmott came home for second with Grant Fraser third. Kierins are always exciting and FNWTR's didn't disappoint. Many thanks to Kevin
Young, who did a fantastic job riding the derny for the rider's enjoyment. The other great race of the night was the round 4 Miss'n'out point score, which is a race that combines endurance, speed and calculative tactics. This race starts as a Miss'n'Out but as the riders are eliminated they actually drop behind the motor bike which is riding 100m behind. When all riders are eliminated the motor bike sets the pace for 3 more laps before pulling off, leaving a mass Kierin style finish. The winner is determined by the amount of accumulated points over the two sections. The smartest rider of the night was clearly James Schneider who placed high in the elimination section than won the Kierin to take first place. A big reminder to all patrons, that next FNWTR will not run due to a DGV prior booking. FNWTR will recommence in a fortnights time August 26.
