Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track RacingDunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, August 5, 2005The Bankstown Rebel Sports 1Km Wheelrace was the feature race for the night. Throughout 2005 Division 4 has been one of the most combative grades, with the dominant rider changing each week. This is partly due to the development of the div 4 riders as they progress up a grade. Rebel sports had kindly donated a pair of knicks and jersey along with 1.2kg packets of Powerade to make a substantial prize pool worth well over $200. From the start it was clear that it would be the limit markers versus everyone else. The limit markers consisted of Gary Hines, Neil Land and Teagan Hines (note the similarity in surnames). Of the rest only Kaarle McCullock had any real chance of crossing the significant gap to the leading trio. Out in Front Gary was setting the pace in the hope that his daughter (Teagan) would profit. Unfortunately for Teagan, Neil Land had also profited from Garry's 800m lead out and easily out sprinted his younger competitor for a prestigious win. Neil is an interesting character and a protégé of FNWTR. He started racing two years ago at FNWTR and improved dramatically to win the 2004 series in Division 4. He has since introduced his two daughters to the sport who are now regular fixtures in junior results. In the early part of 2005 Neil had an accident that sidelined him from the sport, however, his enthusiasm never wavered with the support he showed his daughters. Friday marked the return to racing for Neil and what a return it was, winning the most prestigious race of the night. Along with the Rebel Sport prizes Neil was also presented with an A4 portrait of him winning the event, presented to him by David Birse from Epson Rd Studios. I would like to thank the involvement of the wheelrace sponsors and urge FNWTR supporters to support those who support us - www.rebelsport.com.au/ and www.epsomrdstudios.com.au I guess the other huge race of the night was of course the CNSW Time Blaster. With an outstanding time of 9 minutes and 06 seconds to beat and $100 cash as a serious incentive, there were few who doubted that; Pain would be served as an entrée (laps 1-10) The predictions were correct as only four riders managed to make it to the final 10 laps. (Kial Stewart, Jason Austin, Justin Tomlinson and Peter [Root-man] Spencer). In the end Peter was the victor in a sensational time of 8 minutes and 55 seconds (50.47km/h). With due respect to the winner it was noted that he approached me later to have the $100 bill changed into smaller denominations.
