Tasmanian Keirin Championships

Launceston, Tasmania, November 18, 2004

Price takes Keirin title

Ulverstone's Ben Price has added another honour to his growing resume after taking out the Tasmanian Keirin Championship at the Launceston Silverdome on Thursday night. A top class field lined up for the final, with world champions Matt Goss and Mark Jamieson following the pace bike in the early stages of the 7 lap event. As derny rider Kevin Tabotta manouvered the pace bike off the track at 2 ½ to go, Wes Sulzberger and Ryan Sullivan made a charge from the back of the bunch. Jamieson chased the pair down and closed the gap as the bell rang. Price pounced down the back straight and held on to win ahead of Jamieson, with Goss third.

Laura McCaughey continued her great recent form to take out the Women's Keirin Championship, ahead of Grace Sulzberger and Tarrisha Jones. Devonport's Jarrod Harmon rode well to win the Under 19 Championship, with Will Robinson second and John Rayner third.

In other racing, Ryan Sullivan won the A grade 2000 metre handicap, after a large group of frontmarkers worked hard to hold off scratchmen Mark Jamieson and Steve Rossendell. The B grade 2000 metre handicap was an all up affair, with Ben Laskey grabbing the victory. Grace Sulzberger put in a dominating ride in the women's 2000 metre handicap, taking the win from the scratch mark after only recently moving into senior ranks.

The men's A grade scratch race was a brilliant conclusion to the night's racing with a fast pace set from the gun. Three riders jumped clear in the latter stages, with Will Robinson, Jarrod Harmon and Josh Wilson working hard together to build up a good break; but Wilson lost touch and was swallowed up by the bunch. Harmon and Robinson looked to have the race in their keeping as the bell rang, with a 40 metre gap back to the chasing pack. As the two escapees sprinted for home Mark Jamieson launched from the bunch and rapidly closed the margin. He rounded up the two breakaways on the final bend as if they were standing still and won comfortably with Harmon second and Robinson third. The racing should just get better as the Basslink Christmas Carnivals approaches; next week the 40 km Tasmanian Pointscore Championship is the feature event.
