Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews NSW Track championshipsDunc Grey Velodrome, March 26-28, 2004Kersten dominates NSW state track championshpsLeading Australian track Time Trialist/ sprinter Ben Kersten, displayed his versatility at the 2004 State Track Championships at Dunc Gray Velodrome by taking medals in the 4 events held o9ver the 3 day carnival (Friday 26 - Sunday 28 March 2004. Kersten has just returned from the world Cup in Mexico where he rode a 1.02.02 to take third in the 1000m Time Trial against a top class field. At the State Championships,02 to take third in the 1000m Time Trial against a top class field. At the State Championships, Kersten opened his program by winning the 100m Time Trial in a 1.03.191 on a relatively slow night. On Saturday morning Kersten was back at the track to contest the heats of the Individual Pursuit over 4000m. He rode a very controlled 4.51.110 to qualify in 5th position, he backed up in the next round t win in 4.39.532, an improvement of over 12 seconds. This qualified him to ride off against Chris Pascoe a note pursuiter who had ridden a 4.37.230. In the final Kersten attempted a vary daring tactic of trying to catch Pascoe in the first 1000m. He blasted out of the starting gates to ride a 1.03.790 for the first 1000m which was marginally slower than his Time Trial the night before. Pascoe was able to hold off the challenge and Kersten conceded and eased - Pascoe took the gold and Kersten the silver. Just to prove that he was not a pure sprinter Kersten backed up in the 15km Scratch Championships to take another silver behind defending champion Shaun Hopkins. The Sprint qualifying was scheduled for 10:00am Sunday morning with Kersten ranked no. 1 in the seedings. After such a challenging Saturdays competition it was thought that Kersten may be a little jaded but he backed up to record the fastest qualifying time of 10.682 ahead of former World Sprint Champion Sean Eadie who is on the comeback trail after an injury. Eadie recorded a time of 10.783. In the semi finals Kersten straight heated Anthony Peden of New Zealand in two very close finishes while Eadie did the same to an in-form Greg McFarlane. In the classic final, Eadie was too strong and won the first 2 rounds by small margins. It was sprinting at its best by 2 of the top men in the World. It was a great weekend for Kersten and the spectators saw track cycling at its best.
