Starting off with a early 45min madison chase session, while the riders had 10mins to practice their slinging and positioning under a controlled start, the fireworks soon started off with the young V.I.S. lads in Simon Clarke and Pat Shaw soon on the attack. Despite some very hard chasing from the bunch, they had taken a lap from the bunch and didn't wait too long before going for another. The session ended with only a few close calls and no skin off. The riders didn't have time to rest with one rider from each team going straight into the elimination race. Pat Shaw continued his domination with a good win over Jamie Goddard and Steve Martin (Le Tour Cycles). Then straight on with a 25-lap motorpace, a pretty clean race with the pace lifted with 15 laps to go and a few riders deciding it wasn't worth the hard hit-out. Simon Clarke continued his good day out with a solid win over the in-form Richard England and Metropolitan Champs Rider of the Series Barry Woods. Then the riders were given a good solid break for lunch and a bit of recovery before beginning the next 30min chase session. The support events then rolled on with riders finding motivation hard to find after watching the onslaught of the madison. The madison teams were then called back on for their second chase session involving 30mins with three Sprints. The V.I.S. team managed to gain another lap, and the Giramondo team were in some impressive moves to try and gain a lap on the main bunch. But the bunch were too preoccupied in the sprints and quickly wheeled them back in with the fast lead-outs for the three sprints. It became clear that first place was slipping quickly out of the hands of all the other teams and the big battle for second, third and fourth was about to begin. Aside from the super-strong V.I.S. boys, there was basically five teams within reach: Terry Hammond Cycles Team, Tilta-Away Team, Le Tour Cycles Team, Fitzroy Cycles Team and the determined Giramondo Team. The riders were then rested while some more support events went on. After just over an hour's break, the riders were called back on for the final chase session which was to be one hour with sprints every 10 laps. Plans had obviously been hatching during the break, because the tension in the bunch was enormous. After a couple of sprints, Jamie Goddard (Tilta-Away) punctured and partner Barry Woods had to pull an extra few laps on his own, costing them contact with the bunch. The Terry Hammond Cycles and Le Tour Cycles Boys were quick to react, breaking up the bunch with some solid work, which eventually they were rewarded a lap for. The V.I.S. boys were tiring and finding it much harder to take laps which they had done earlier, and the sprints kept coming thick and fast. As the session closed, it was fragmented with tired riders everywhere trying to hang on to the laps and points that they had, only to get the session finished. In the end, the V.I.S. boys walked out decisive winners with Old-Man (Doug) Garley and his young counterpart Richard England (Terry Hammond Cycles) taking second place; Steve Martin and Andrew Steele (Le Tour Cycles) finished off on their own in third place, beating Barry Woods and Jamie Goddard (Tilt-Away) into fourth. All in all, a brilliant days racing and a hard hit-out for any of the riders attempting next weekend's 50km Victorian Madison Championship at Warragul.
