Cutting and Clarke take Madison Gold

By David Oliver

Mersey Valley Devonport Cycling Club members Daniel Cutting and Nathan Clarke teamed up to take out the 2004 Tasmanian Madison Championship at the Launceston Silverdome on Thursday night. The pair picked up 33 sprint points to defeat the team of Matt Goss and Matthew Atkins, who finished on 27 points, with Hobart duo Peter Smith and Stephen Rossendell third on 21 points.

Clarke and Cutting were content to wait for the sprint points on offer in the 50 km, 175 lap race. Sprints were held every 18 laps, worth 5, 3, 2, 1, for the first four riders over the line.

Despite numerous attacks from their rivals, particularly the team of Mark Jamieson and Matt Rice, Cutting and Clarke answered every challenge and controlled the race from the front.

All nine teams finished and there were no falls during the race. Clarke and Cutting will now focus on the prestigious Bendigo Madison, where Clarke will join forces with Darren Young, and Cutting will team up with Rice. Goss and Atkins will ride together at Bendigo, with Rossendell and Brendan Geale both teaming up with mainland riders.

In other racing, Mark Jamieson proved too strong in the open scratch race, hitting out at one and a half to go and holding off Stephen Rossendell and Ben Price.

Junior riders continued their preparation for next weekends national titles, with Ben Fielding, Ben Grenda and Dave Lyons all showing good form. Jake Laskey and Stephen Heppel both performed well in Under 13 events.
