Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track Racing #16Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, September 12, 2003By Paul Craft With only two nights of FNWTR remaining, the battle lines have been drawn. However, that hasn't stopped the rest of us from having another great night of competitive racing in a relaxed atmosphere. The feature race for the night was the Nokian Racing Tyre 1km Wheelrace for Div 2. The nations top Juniors and Masters returned from the Australian titles with a swag of medals and their sights firmly set on a win in this prestigious event. Liz Georgouras was our limit marker on 100m and set off with a blistering pace. Scratch man Michael Mellish was riding tactically correct, trying to use the riders in front to get him to the lead. But it was the middle markers who took control of the race, specifically Ivan Colig and Jim Gray who worked well together catching all in front and keeping their butts clean of all those behind. In the final, although they made it look impressive, it was clear to the educated that Ivan was allowing his teammate to take the win. This victory capped off an amazing week for Jim Gray. Earlier in the week he claimed two Australian titles and now the Nokian 1km Wheelrace. To broadens Jim's eternal smile he is now leading the Div 2 pointscore overhauling Michael Mellish by 6 points with tonight's victory. The ever-smiling Jim Gray was presented his prize by Malcolm Rodgers and Sean Eadie. Friday also saw our monthly Kierins with a new derny rider Brad Cox. As always these are a great feature and ran ever so competitively. An added bonus to this already exciting event was the presence of Former World Sprint Champion Sean Eadie. Sean is on the road/track to recovery after a serious knee injury and was only too happy to offer his knowledge for this speedster's event by adding his interesting commentary. The Italian National team rider Greg McFarlane had a fantastic night with a perfect score of 42 points for the night's racing. Greg is slowly building for the upcoming track season. Brett Hansen upped his grade, which proved to be a good move finishing no worse than 3rd in any of his races in Div 2b. Lindsey Munks made a triumphant return to FNWTR taking 3 victories in div 3. So too did Penny Rowbothan who took 2 victories in the woman's division. Next week will be the penultimate night for FNWTR and the last chance for riders to qualify for the final wheelrace. The prize for this race will be Cash + enough Redbull to put you and two of mates over the UCI doping regulations limits. Look forward to a big turn-out for some fast pace racing.
