Johnson finished runner-up in Cycling Tasmania's Rider of the Year award last season and is away to another flyer this time around, winning the Devonport Oval Wheelrace and picking up further points by finishing third in the Lightning Handicap. Johnson won the Oval Wheel off a liberal mark of 120 m, which is sure to be scrutinised in the weeks to come. In the same quinella as last year, promising youngster Wes Sulzberger finished second to Ryan Johnson, while Hobart rider Jason Johnson collected third prizemoney. Jason Johnson also won the Lightning Handicap, holding off the fast finishing scratchman Nathan Clarke, who had better luck in the A Grade Scratch. Clarke is the early leader in CT's Rider-of-the-Year award for 2003-04 after showing good form at the Professional Cross Country Club of Tasmania's West Park Carnival the week prior. The Atkins' brothers Gareth and Matthew were second and third respectively to Clarke in the A Grade Scratch, while recognised road rider Chris Wilding won the B Grade Scratch. In junior racing, Aaron Jones (Under 17), Daniel Jamieson (Under 15) and Sam Brett (Under 13) were prominent in all race results.
