Wise & Goldie sing in the rain

Cold and rain this week to contrast with the 40 degree heat of the previous week! Still, a good field waited out the showers and was able to complete most of the program before the heavens opened for good.

A late attack from Doug Garley (Terry Hammond Cycles) and Matt Jensen (Kennedy Cycle Fit) in the A Grade scratch race nearly paid off, before a big effort from Cam Wise (Cycle Finesse) with a lap and half to go saw him take the lead with half a lap to travel. Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) had positioned himself well, and came off Wise's wheel in the home straight to snatch the win, with Mal Sawford third.

Mike Goldie showed the youngsters that he still has plenty of speed, coming from well back at the bell to win the B grade event ahead of Michael and Tess Downing (Le Tour Cycles).

Australian Junior Sprint Champion Shane Perkins (Terry Hammond Cycles)took out the sprint derby in unusual fashion. Typically recording times around 11 seconds for the final 200 meters, he won his heat in 15.5 - with no-one attempting to come past until the final meters! In the final, Cam Wise took a flyer two laps out, but had the champ glued to his wheel. When Wise tired, Perkins rolled through to take the win in a 'sizzling' 15 seconds.

Greg Nicholson upset Goldie in the B Grade derby, gambling on an early attack, and holding off a fast finishing Goldie with Tess Downing third.

The final completed event was an Elimination race, with Reece Van Beek assuming the pace making for much of the race, and showing great strength to hold on until the final four riders. Hayden Mead was next to go, leaving Cam Wise and Warren Knevitt to fight out the win, with Wise too quick. His consistent results across the three races gave him the Overall win, ahead of Knevitt and Perkins.

Goldie returned to the winners list in the B Grade race, finishing ahead of Arthur Karrayannis in his first race on the track. Goldie took the Overall, ahead of Nicholson and Michael Downing.

Carnegie Caulfield Track racing resumes on December 6, no racing next Saturday due to the Melbourne Cup on Wheels at Vodafone Arena. Training races are also held at the Packer Park Velodrome on Thursday evenings at 6pm, weather permitting.
