Fresh off a win in the Devonport Trial Wheel on Tuesday night and recent strong performances in the Hadspen Criterium (2nd), Georgetown Wheel (4th) and the Patrick's Latrobe Trial Wheel (2nd), Menzies last night showed his liking for the velodrome's steep banks and speed on the boards with a strong victory in the main race of the evening, the 7 lap 2000m handicap. Starting midfield, Menzies quickly formed a strong bunch with fellow middlemarkers Andrew Loft, Brendan Geale, American David Wiswell and Ryan Johnson in his return race after a bad fall two weeks ago. The front-markers made the most of their marks but the majority were swallowed up by the middle bunch at three to go, leaving the scratchmen Jame Carney and Wouter Van Mechlen struggling to close the gap, and the outmarkers Josh Murfet, Sarah Hammer and Becky Conzelman with a good chance to hold on. Murfet looked a clear winner as the bell rang, but Menzies showed his rapid acceleration by leaping from the bunch and rounding up the outmarkers like they were standing still. Wiswell followed Menzies round into second place, with Sarah Hammer holding on for third in front of a fast finishing Ryan Johnson. Carney and Van Mechlen rolled in after failing to make any impression. However, their class came to the fore in the Aces scratch race with Carney taking the win ahead of the Belgian, and veteran Laurie Venn took third ahead of Menzies.
