With just seven laps to go in the bike race, Dave Koesel and Wayne Cook broke away from the field, held onto their lead and won the final sprint in the second day of racing as NAS-TRACK's Madison Racing League Detroit Six Day Bicycle Race continued Wednesday, Aug. 20 at the Velodrome at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Koesel barely held off Rippin' Ronnie Sink, who not only bridged the gap but put himself elbow-to-elbow and as he said, "head to head" with the leader in the final turn of the 1/8th of a mile oval. The outcome of the bike race depended on the placing in the final sprint and both teams - Koesel with Team Blue and Sink with Team Red, were contenders.

Also in the mix was the team of Andre Champoux and Mark Freed -- Team Green, who had the most points going into the last lap. A fourth place finish in the final sprint dropped them into second overall.

A total of eight two-man teams took to the boards in this second night of racing. Racers from as far away as Toronto - Rob Good, and as close as Rochester Hills, Tony Bruley, have been gearing up for the event, the first of its kind in the Detroit area for more than 20 years. Racers compete nightly over the course of six days. Two racers - one from the "A" group and one from the "AAs" - will win with the winner being the racer who earns the most points.

Racing continues at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, Friday, Aug. 22, Saturday, Aug. 23 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. There is no admission fee. The Velodrome at Bloomer Park is located at the north end of John R in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
