Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday night Winter Track Racing #11Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, August 8, 2003By Paul Craft Keirins are always an exciting part of track racing and Friday night's edition set the tone for yet another great night of racing. Many thanks to Mark Fulcher, who rode the derny in cool temperatures, for 10 events. Each heat had a different flavour, which kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Arguably the most aggressive race was won by Shaun Hopkins. Shaun had to fend off a classy field but had particular trouble with one rider who rode from last wheel to first on the duck board, bumping each rider up the track on his way. All this, at 65km/hr in the final lap. Needless to say he was DQ'd with a stern word in his ear on completion. The feature race for night was the FNWTR 1km Wheelrace for division 1. Phil Stokes was spotted last week buying Peter Barnard (FNWTR handicapper) a beer in the Handle Bar Tavern. This may have been the reason for Phil receiving a very generous 55m start. The pace of the race was unbelievable with a time of 1:05.34 for the km. It was a blanket finish with four riders spread up the track with Phil Stokes just getting over Hoppy. This is the first time this season Hoppy has been defeated in the Wheelrace, so keep an eye out for him in the pub with Barnard. During any quiet times in the night the crowd were entertained by Greg McFarlane, with his infield antics. Greg is a class rider who is using FNWTR to ride himself into form for the coming track season. Standout riders for the night were Michael Mellish (Div 2), Joel Chant (Div 2b), Mike Tremaine (Div 3) and Kylie Spencer (Women). Of these riders it's Mike Tremaine who has pedaled his last strokes in Div 3, with an outstanding display of speed and endurance in all his events. He can now look forward to testing his developing speed in Div 2b. Next week, featuring the Div 2 wheelrace, will not be one to miss. Div 2 has traditionally been the most evenly contested grade throughout the season and I can't wait to see who comes out on top this week. Additionally, as of next week, place getter points received for the pointscore will be doubled till the series final on September 26. Now a win will earn you 10 points instead of 5. This will keep our pointscore leaders on their toes as just about anyone can come up the ranks and take the major prize of the series - a Velocraft track frame.
