Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track Racing #10Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, August 1, 2003World champs choose FNWTR over StuttgartBy Paul Craft Once again Friday Nights field had more current or former World Champions than you could poke a stick at. Additionally, we were blessed with the presence of Greg McFarlane, who is a member of the Italian national track team. McFarlane told me he had the choice of going to the World Titles in Stuttgart, Germany, or coming to FNWTR. Wisely, he chose the latter. The feature race for the night was the Nokian racing tyre Women's 1km Wheelrace. Right from the start the limit markers set a blistering pace that looked like it would win the race. With one lap remaining, the call was made that the winner would come from the lead group of Bosch, Oxlade or Howard. But as the leaders sprinted to the line Kelly Furey (scratch) came storming home to take a superb victory. Nokian sponsored the Wheelrace and Malcolm (the importer) was at the track once again displaying his products. The 1 lap Drag-Race challenge was a huge success. Four riders drew lots to see which position up the track they would start off. The whistle blew to start the mad dash to the line. All up, we had 14 rounds of this event with some surprising results. For the final round the winners of the four fastest heats lined up for the Champion of Champions event. Alex Sommers won in a time of 20:12seconds for 280m. Alex showed immense patience in coming off third wheel to take victory. Next week our monthly Keirins (2nd Fri of Month), which have been hotly contested on previous occasions, will be one of the feature events along with the Division 1 1km Wheelrace. As always, the night will have a good spread of sprint and endurance races. All riders are guaranteed at least 5 races to give their lactic system a work out. Bring on Friday.
