Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews George Town Cycling CarnivalGeorge Town, Tasmania, Saturday, December 2, 2006By Rod Morris in George Town Launceston's Will Robinson continued the good form he had showed at the end of last season when he won the George Town Wheelrace at the weekend. Robinson, a former winner of Cycling Tasmania's Rider-of-the-Season award, is now in his third year in open class racing and finished the 2005-06 series by winning the St Helens Wheel. Riding off a 100 m handicap, Robinson won by a bike length from Jason Bellchambers, who is another starting to show promise after years of near misses, while Scottsdale junior Ben Grenda flashed home for third. Grenda, son of 1984 Australian gold medal Olympian Michael, is in his first season of open age racing and after winning the A Grade Scratch at the season-opening PCCCT Carnival a fortnight ago, impressed again with his minor placing in the wheelrace final. Another to impress was veteran Stephen Martini. After winning the B Grade race in the second round of the Tasmanian Criterium Championships, Martini was fourth in the George Town Wheel and finished second to fellow veteran Jamie Perry in the George Town B Grade Scratch. The A Grade Scratch saw Daniel Cutting win his second George Town title, when he held off former dual champion, Nathan Clarke, while Tasmanian international rider Abram Manion was an impressive third. Clarke made amends in the invitation keirin, with John Rayner and Manion filling the minor placings. Rayner, recent winner of the PCCCT Wheel, has also started the new season off in great fashion, as he won the George Town 1000 m Handicap. In women's racing, Janelle Smith, Harriet Kossman, Emma Heynes and Laura McCaughey were the stars of the George Town Carnival. Smith won both the B Grade Scratch and B Grade Elimination; Kossman was a surprise winner of the George Town Wheel, Heynes won the lightning handicap and was second in both the wheel final and A Grade Scratch, while McCaughey rode strongly to win the A Grade title. It was the first time in history that the George Town Cycling Club had been able to stage two scratch races for women, whilst in another first, the girls were offered elimination races as well. Nathan Hinkley dominated the junior category, winning all three races on offer for the Under 13 riders.Racing off scratch, Hinkley made short work of his outmarkers in both the lightning handicap and wheelrace events and then as expected won the scratch race easily. Newcomer Ria Doust won two of the Under 15 events, including the wheelrace, whilst in the Under 17s, titles were shared around with Ryan Ockerby (1000 m Hcp), Brody Baker (Wheelrace), David Lyons (A Grade Scratch) and Dylan King (B Grade Scratch) all successful.
