Rockhampton Cycling Club - A Timeline of Cycling History

1920 - The Rockhampton Amateur Wheelers was established

1960 - The first Rockhampton Cup on Wheels was run & won by John McMaster on the newly bituminized track

1961 - The first Capricorn Cup (a women's race) was won by C. Ball

1965 - Baxter Oval was officially opened at the Australia Day Meeting

1967 - The club's first Australian champion, Greg Shuker was crowned for the U17 Sprint

1977 - Kenrick Tucker Jnr. became the Under 19 Australian sprint champion and was selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Austria

1978 - Kenrick won the gold medal in the sprint event at the 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games. He was the first Rockhampton person to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games

1978 - Mayor Pilbeam announced that a replica Edmonton Commonwealth Games track would be built to commemorate Kenrick's achievement.

1980 - The Kenrick Tucker Velodrome was constructed at its current location on Berserker St, beside the North Rockhampton swimming pool

1981 - Russell Tucker won the 15km Junior National Championships and Michael McLachlan was the first Rockhampton road cyclist to win an Australian title.

1982 - Kenrick Tucker won a sprint gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane

1983 - Hubert Opperman officially opened the Kenrick Tucker Velodrome

1989 - The Rockhampton Amateur Wheelers became the Rockhampton Cycling Club. During Ted Price's Presidency lights were erected at the Velodrome

1992 - Benard Panton became Rockhampton Cycling Clubs' first world champion at the World Junior Track Championships, winning the Pointscore

1994 - Kenrick Tucker won the Club's first Masters Title at the World Masters Championship for the sprint and time trial.

1995 - Kerrie Meares became the Club's first female National Title winner for the U17 sprint and 500m time trial

1997 - The club hosted the Junior, Senior and Masters State Championships. Anna Meares secured her first national title winning the 500m time trial.

2000 - Kerrie Meares won the Elite Women's U19 500m time trial at the World Junior Track Championships and Rockhampton Cycling Club hosted the Sydney Olympic Track Cycling sprint team

2001 - Anna Meares won 500m Time Trial at the World Junior Track Championships

2002 - Kerrie and Anna Meares were selected for the Manchester Commonwealth Games, with Kerrie winning gold in the sprint and 500m time trial. Anna won a bronze in the sprint

2002 - Wade Cosgrove won the U19 Mens 1000m Time Trial at the Junior World Track Cycling Championships

2002 - Russell Tucker won the Masters 1000m Time Trial at the World Masters Championships

2003 - The club hosted the State Championships (junior and senior) with 4 Juniors selected to represent Queensland at the National Titles in Adelaide. The majority of the Queensland Senior team was selected from the RCC to compete in Sydney after RCC riders took out 19 of the 23 medals won by Queensland at those titles

2003 - Miles Olman became the Junior World Points Score Champion at the Junior World Track Cycling Championships in Moscow, Russia

2003 - Several of the Club's elite riders continued competing in the European tour events.

2004 - Anna Meares becomes a Senior World and Olympic Champion (Youngest Female Ever) and World Record Holder in the 500m time trial

2004 - Miles Olman wins two World Junior Track Championship Titles in the Teams Pursuit and Madison and a silver medal in defence of his Junior World Point Score Title

2004 - Rockhampton Cycling Club hosted the Athens Olympic Track sprint team

2005 - Jeremy Hogg wins a bronze medal in the Team Sprint at the 2005 JUnior World Track Championships in Vienna, Austria
