About the velodrome and Rockhampton
The Kenrick Tucker Velodrome - named after one of Rockhampton's most famous
cyclists - is an outdoor concrete track built to UCI standards. In addition
to hosting many championships, is also hosted the Australian track cycling sprint
squad prior to its departure for Athens earlier this year.
With its long history or supporting cycling, Rockhampton has become one of
Australia's strongest cycling centers. Also known as the unofficial capital
of Central Queensland, Rockhampton is located 638 km north of the Queensland
capital, Brisbane, some eight metres above sea level and just a few kilometres
north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Founded in 1855, the city is situated just
40 kilometres inland from the Pacific Ocean and alongside the banks of Queensland's
largest river, the Fitzroy.
It is bounded by the Berserker Ranges and Mount Archer (607 metres high) which
provide an imposing backdrop to a busy, growing city that is both friendly and
vibrant. The city's development accelerated when gold was discovered and the
income generated by mining activity is revealed by its many ornate and elaborate
Victorian-era buildings.
