2004 Queensland Elite Track Championships
Rockhampton
Friday 14 January
Day 5 - Day 1, Rockhampton Cup on Wheels
Queensland State Championships Elite Men's Keirin
In the hot Rockhampton afternoon sun, the U19 and elite men took to the track
to contest one of the few remaining Qld State Championship events still left
to race, the infamous keirin.
Four heats of Elite Men riders raced with the favourites, all making it through
to the semi finals: Ryan Bayley, Shaun Hopkins, Sean Eadie and local favourites
Grant Irwin, Damian Harris and Kangaroo Point's Daniel Rynne. With the field
narrowed to two quality semi final fields, Bayley and Eadie continued to dominate,
winning their semi finals and advancing to the final, along with Hopkins, Rynne,
Irwin and CATS Bradley Payne. The final was every bit as exciting as expected
and an enthusiastic crowd swarmed to the fence to witness the Olympic Keirin
Champion Ryan Bayley do his thing. The race rolled off, without too much tussle
early on, culminating in a bolt for the line from the 200m mark. Irwin moved
out from second wheel as the pack exited the bend, powering away with Bayley
alongside him. Irwin held Bayley to take the win.
Queensland State Championships U19 Men's Keirin
Three strong heats of U19 men took to the track early in the day's proceedings
to contest the Keirin Championship of Queensland.
Todd Dawson (CATS), Ben Simonelli (Broncos) and Joel Davis (Kangaroo Point)
took out the heats, qualifying comfortably for the semi finals. Local Rockhampton
cyclists Tyler Wright, Mostyn Armstrong, Jack Rassie and Neil Teichmann all
made the top four in the heats and moved through to the semis. Simonelli continued
to show his dominance from the week's racing, taking out Semi Final two, and
setting up a semi final showdown with a hint of southern dominance. In a hard
fought final, Simonelli came out the victor, ahead of Davis and Bateson in a
final 200m time of 11.72 seconds. Simonelli has been the dominant sprinter at
this year's State Championships, taking out numerous State medals, including
the U19 men's sprint title earlier in the week.
One Lap Dash Invitational
There's nothing more exciting than to watch a cyclist wind up their bike behind
a motor pacer and see how fast they can humanly ride one lap of the velodrome.
The One Lap Dash Invitational did not disappoint with five of the CQU Rocky
Cup's quickest men taking to the velodrome to see who could fly the fastest.
Queensland U19 1000m Time Trial Champion Jeremy Hogg was first cab off the rank,
and rode a very credible 19.26 seconds. Hoppy rolled off next and came in slightly
slower than Hogg with 19.39seconds. Sean "Big Man" Eadie was next, and he flew
out from behind the motorbike, powering all the way to the finish line to register
18.70 seconds, the first to break 19 seconds!
Of course, a one lap dash wouldn't be complete without the dual Olympic Gold
Medalist and CQU Rocky Cup special guest Ryan Bayley. Bayley wound up his bike
behind the motorbike and flew down the bank, showing incredible speed and strength,
crossing the line in 18.12 seconds. The weight of the home crowd then fell onto
Grant Irwin, Rockhampton Cycling Club's latest hero; Queensland Elite Mens 1000m
Time Trial Champion and fresh from his Queensland Keirin Gold Medal, full of
confidence after defeating Bayley in the final earlier in the evening.
Irwin gave it everything as he accelerated off the motorbike to the cheers
of a strong Rockhampton crowd, crossing the line in 18.66 seconds, 0.54 seconds
shy of Flyin' Ryan's mark.
Women's 25km Points Race Championship of Queensland
A small field of elite women took part in the Queensland Women's 25km point
race Championship in what turned out to be a gruelling race, requiring great
physical and mental fitness to endure the entire event.
Rockhampton's Alex Bright put in a gutsy effort in the early part of the race,
contesting numerous sprints and getting onto the leader board. However, the
race began to take its toll on the sprinter, who found herself dropped from
the bunch, only to get back on and contest the next sprint, but failing to remain
with the bunch for the remainder of the race. Hamilton Pine River's Anna Jones-Perrin
began to stamp her authority on the event as did Rockhampton's Anouska Edwards,
who fought each other for the points. Bright continued to ride the race, attempting
to ride an even tempo to hold onto the points she had accumulated early in the
race. However, she couldn't hold on and was lapped by the field, only to lose
her points and her place for a medal. The final result saw an exhausted four
women finish, with Jones-Perrin taking the gold medal ahead of Edwards and Lifecycle's
Wendy Habermann
