Day 3 Wrap Up
U19 Men's Sprint - Simonelli takes back to back sprint titles
Broncos Cycling Club member Ben Simonelli defeated Rockhampton's Jeremy Hogg
in the fight for the Queensland Sprint Championship on Day 3 of the Queensland
Track Cycling Championships at the Kenrick Tucker Velodrome. Simonelli qualified
fastest (11.45) and was awarded a bye in the first round, while Hogg defeated
Neil Teichmann and Luke Seiler before then defeating William Draffen (Townsville)
to reach the final. Simonelli defeated Tyler Wright and Jack Rassie to bring
on the gold medal ride off between himself and Hogg and left Draffen and Rassie
to fight it out for the bronze medal.
Simonelli then defeated Hogg for the gold in two matches while fellow Rockhampton
member Jack Rassie defeated William Draffin of Townsville for the bronze medal
after Draffin crashed in the first match.
Elite Men's Sprint - Harris defeats Simonelli for Queensland Title
Rockhampton Cycling Club's Damian Harris is the newly crowed Elite Men's Sprint
State Champion after defeating Adam Simonelli of Broncos in the ride off for
gold and silver.
Simonelli made good use of the tailwind in qualifying, registering the fastest
time in the elite men's flying 200m with a tidy 11.04 seconds. Qualifying times
for 2nd and 3rd place qualification times went to Harris (Rockhampton) in 11.37
and Daniel Rynne (Kangaroo Point) in 11.39.
However is was Harris who was the standout performance, defeating fellow clubmate
Lindsay McMaster in Round 1 before knocking Rynne out of the gold and silver
medal ride off, beating him in 2 straight sets. Harris then went on to secure
the gold in two straight rides ahead of Simonelli, who withdrew due to illness
in the second match. The bronze medal was won by Daniel Rynne who defeated Christopher
Wilson, also in two rides.
