Jackson Takes Sequim Road Race with "super-vicious-crazy-go-nuts-smack-down attack”Team Broadmark Capital/Hagen Berman One Two finishBy Hyun Lee On March 12th, road racing in Western Washington returned to the site of the Tour de Dungeness Series in Sequim, Washington. In the past, this road race series was popular because it represented a glimmer of hope for racing in sunny conditions and dry roads because of the rain shadow from the nearby Olympic Mountains. For the second year in a row, this race was a one day road race put on by the Garage Racing Team out of Seattle, Washington. The whole team sacrificed a chance to race in some rare sunny weather in Western Washington this year to put on a quality event. Thanks guys! Michael Emde (Axley USA/Spoke & Sprocket), current Washington Cup Series leader after Round 1 at Ronde Ohop came to defend his series lead. While mostly flat, blustery conditions made Sunday a selective race for the tactically savvy riders who made it into the early breakaway. In the Elite Men’s race, an early breakway was started on lap one of seven 12 mile laps of the Sequim circuit. A small group of five was caught by a small chase group, making the breakway a group of nine with riders from several large teams represented-Broadmark/Hagen-Berman, Wines of Washington, Recycled Cycles and Axley USA. Conspicuously absent were Michael Emde, the Washington Cup Series leader and Rob Campbell (the Valley) third in that series. The breakaway of nine motored along, extending their lead over the main bunch to as high as four minutes. Through natural attrition brought on by blustery conditions and Sequim's rolling terrain, the breakaway group shrunk to six with Broadmark capital/Hagens Berman the only team with two riders in the break (Anton Jackson and Iann Tubbs). With one lap to go, the breakaway group had five minutes on the main pack and three minutes on Jonathan Sundt chasing after a puncture. "After afew attacks and the five of us sitting on each other, Strangeland (Wines of Washington) suggested that we roll to keep the guys we'd dropped from getting back on. I knew that Ian and I could easily outkick anybody there, so moves to win coming in the last 500 meters would be the best for us," said Anton Jackson. "We hit the last corner, about 600 meters or so with the [Joshua Tack] on the front, Ian, the Valley guy (Andrew Lathrop), Strangeland and then me. [Joshua Tack] rolled off and tried to roll his gap to the finish. Guys were looking around, hoping somebody else would chase. I saw Ian [Tubbs] make the quick decision to chase (which would be our responsibility) but that's not what we wanted. I decided to roll my plan there which was a super-vicious-crazy-go-nuts-smack-down attack from the back and force everybody to chase and set Ian up," recalled Jackson. Launching his "super-vicious-crazy-go-nuts-smack-down attack" , Jackson got a small gap ahead of his breakaway partners into the straightaway to the finish. "I thought for sure I was screwed from that far out but the other guys just didn't have the giddy-up. I soloed in and Ian capitalized on my move to handily work them over for second. Ah yeah!" recounted Jackson. With Broadmark Capital/Hagens Berman placing riders in first and second place, Anton Jackson moved into second place in the Washington Cup with Michael Emde defending hid lead by 16 points.
