Brade takes a hot evening's handicap crit

By Peter Winton

Fine weather confronted riders for Tuesday evening's handicap criterium held at Mildura's Dolfin Drive (a new Industrial estate) at 6:30pm. The temperature had just ticked over the maximum for the day at 33.8 degrees C. and the radiation from the smooth black bitumen seemed to decrease the comfort level a tad.

This shorter crit circuit of approx. 300 metres between each hot-dog turn really takes the p-s out of your legs, more especially when they are attached to my 46 year old body, worse if you're the age (50+) of Barry Pollock and Arthur Anderson Having said that they are usually a couple of hardened cyclists.

A handicap operated tonite placing the redness of Team Cannondale off scratch, i.e., Kevin Tankard and Rob McNally, chasing Ian Brade, Richard Hale and Brendan Liddle at 1 minute, then Peter Winton and Arthur Anderson at 1:30. Next up front were Les Jordan, Jack Lokan and Nathan Welsh at 2:00 and on the limit mark of 2:30 resided Dion Basse-Anstee and Barry Pollock. Most of us are too old for intermediate sprints so don't look for that aspect in this report!

Les Jordan punctured around mid-race which put an end to his chances. Dion Basse- Anstee rode well to stay away for as long as he did and top marks to Ian Brade for his ride in taking out the event. Ian managed to get around to the back of the scratchies before they departed and stayed within spraying distance of a bidon to make it nigh impossible for Team Cannondale to get the lap back.

Anderson and Winton were never headed by the chopping block riders but failed to reel in all the limit riders. For those other Club members who didn't make this week's crit but recall the most recent one, the good Doctor stayed on his machine this week!

This Sunday is a 48km road race at the Merbein Cemetery circuit, riders be there at 8:45 please for sign on.
