Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club

April 27, 2002

Thirty riders faced the starter for the Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club 44.5km handicap last Saturday afternoon, April 27, 2002.

Five riders set off from the limit mark with the scratch bunch of four starting thirteen minutes behind.

At the end of the first lap the remaining limit riders of Vince O'Dwyer, Geoff Gooley and Peter Vessel had a lead of two minutes and ten seconds on the combined group comprising the four and six minute bunches that had combined on the climb up the steep side of Marshall Mount.

Peter Evans, Adam Rourke and Jeff Gray were driving along that group. Dave Morris was the only other rider able to go with them, they had dispensed with the other eight riders with their relentless pursuit of the leaders.

The scratchies had combined with the bunch infront on the first lap which created a chasing group of five riders. At the end of the first lap they had halved the gap to the four minute group.

The limit riders were caught and passed by the four minute group before the last turn at Calderwood road so they were then the leaders on the road. Even though the riders in the combined scratch block bunch, Guy Mathiske, Graham Rutter, Marcus Arnold, Joe McDonnell and Richie Lorenc were working well together they were not making much of an inroad into the gap to the four minute group.

Evans was too strong on the day and took the win. The minor placing's were Rourke, Gray and Morris.

Mathiske won the scratch group sprint home for fifth place and fastest time for the race of 1.10.28. Rutter and McDonnell filled out the top seven for prize money.

Evans had ridden strongly for his deserved win which was one placing better than his result in the 41.5km handicap of March 30th and the Master's B grade Southern Division road titles.

As next week's race is a 67km scratch race the start time has been brought forward to 1pm. Group Nine is to provide the marshals.
