Riders fight for the largest easter egg

With a range of rather large chocolate Easter eggs up for grabs, riders had their minds on the job at the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club criterium races at Heffron Park on Saturday 12 April 2003.
A-Grade was a 32km tussle between Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello) and Randwick Botany junior star Robert Cater. Each rider attacked but was immediately covered by the other. Ross Mackey and Will Grey were dropped early in the race and Arron Castles survived until 10km to go. Only four riders were left to contest the sprint with Anthony Spurgeon winning the largest egg in a time of 52min 28sec, followed by Robert Cater, Clive Hammerson and George Pappas (Dulwich Hill).
Craig Padman won the 30km B-Grade event in a time of 48min 35sec and an average speed of over 37kph. Craig is from Cycling Otago club in New Zealand and is enjoying a few weeks in Sydney before heading to Queensland. He found out about Saturday racing at Heffron Park via the Randwick Botany Cycling Club website www.randwickbotanycc.com. Craig said it is a great website, with up-to-date information and good race reports.
"It was a good race today, fast and I liked the closed tight technical circuit", Craig said after the race. Randwick Botany's Dave Macpherson rode a gutsy race and managed to get a break on the B grade peleton. Dave spent about 3 laps away from the bunch before the windy conditions were just too much for him. Other placegetters included Paul Huntly (Canberra), Dave McHugh (Sydney), Brett Watson (North Sydney), club president John Buckton and Roger Crawford. Peter McDonald rode in B-Grade this week after placing second in C-Grade last week.
Janelle Lindsay took out the 28km C-Grade race, fresh from a track training session earlier in the day. Lindsay was recently teamed with Lindy Hou, a visually impaired rider, as part of the Australian Paralympic tandem cycle team. Lindsay and Hou are on course for a strong performance at the National Championships at Dunc Grey Velodrome in early April.
After that, it's on to the European track championships in Prague during September. Then, their goal is the Paralympic Games in Athens in September 2004. Other placegetter in C-Grade were Shaun Ballesty and Simon Llewellyn (Dulwich Hill). Phillip Chippendale rode an intelligent race but finished without an Easter egg.
Several new riders raced in the 20km D-Grade event, which was won by Joe Henry in a time of 35min 14sec and an average speed of 34.4kph. Justin Sharples and Brian Funston rode strongly in their first outing at Heffron Park. Second place went to Andrew Young and equal third was Alex Lazik (Waratah Veterans) and Chris Federspiel.
E-Grade was won by Julia Guinan in a time of 28min 36sec and 25.4kph. Second was Ross Fullerton with Kevin Blanchfield third.
Ten junior riders competed in time trails and 8km handicap race. Results at the end of the report.
