The last hurrah

More great weather for the last of Carnegie Caulfield’s road races for the 2002 winter season. After a regional event hosted by Blackburn next weekend, and a couple of weeks off for the World Masters Games, the Club’s Criterium season will commence at Glenvale Crescent on October 20.

A reasonably small field presented on the day, with many contesting the Melbourne to Shepparton Classic, resting after the outstanding premiership-winning performance at the Mooloolaba National Road Championships, or for a few unfortunates, licking their wounds after a morning of carnage on the infamous Hell Ride!

A and B Grades started together, but racing for separate prizes. Garron Buckland (Le Tour Cycles), in heavy training for the mountain bike race at the World Masters, repaid the generosity of the bunch which had soft pedaled until he rejoined the field after missing the start by a couple of minutes by attacking very early on! Joined by club mate Brian Sing the attack blew a few unfortunates off the back, and the pair had an advantage of 40 seconds at the start of the first climb.

The climbing form of Murray Spink (Giant) narrowed the gap to 25 seconds at the summit, but shed a few more from the bunch in the process. No one was able to lift the pace across the rolling hills, and the leading pair began to pull away again. At the summit of the Ripplebrook climb towards the end of the lap, the lead was out to nearly a minute, and unless the leaders ran out of steam the bunch would do no better than third.

The margin blew out on the second lap, with Buckland leaving his companion behind in the closing stages and recording a comfortable win. Sing held on for second to the delight of his parents, while Spink went clear on the climbs to solo in for third. Big Max Rainsford lead the remnants of the bunch home, just ahead of the B Grade winner Owen Taylor. Ken Ford took second as the only other B Grader to stay with the bunch, with Liwa Becker rounding out the podium in a determined ride after losing contact on the Ripplebrook climb on lap 1.

C Grade, the days largest field, also saw an early break go clear. Chris Tassell, Rob Curtis and Paul Davine went clear through the hills on the first lap and opened a gap of nearly 2 minutes as they crossed the finish line with 1 lap to go. The pace set by Davine proved too hot for his companions however, and the hills second time round saw Tassell and Curtis lose contact and get caught and dropped by the bunch.

At the finish, Davine had a 2’35 advantage, over second place getter Bill Joycey who won a tight sprint from Brian Burke and Jan Wilhoeft. Debra Hobbs finished strongly in the bunch sprint to take out the Women’s section of the C Grade race.

The combined D Grade and Juniors race over 1 lap of the course introduced an element of handicap racing. 11 year old Dale Reith would have been out of his league over the 40km circuit, and was allowed to start from the Heads Road corner, a 10km head start over the chasers.

Dale put his head down, and while the older riders took a few miles to start to lift the pace, slogged away in his own time trial. Barely able to maintain forward momentum on the steep climbs, he did enough to stay clear for a very courageous win. The bunch spread out through the hills, with Masters rider Michael Boyce holding a 30 second advantage over John Sheard at the finish. New-comer Troy Earle took the final prize cheque ahead of Women’s winner Meaghan Godfrey.

Thanks to all officials today and throughout the season for helping ensure the Club’s races were run safely and professionally. Today’s willing volunteers were Daryl Annells, Davis and Tina Downing, Frank Murphy, Doug Reith, Ann Johnstone, Mike Clarke and Doug Moody.
