Results and Reports for June 8-14, 2002AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Sydney Road ChampionshipsParramatta Park, June 8, 2002Stojanow stomps homeReport by Shaun Hopkins With 25 laps scheduled of a 3km circuit around picturesque Parramatta Park awaiting us at the start, and a rather large bunch some 80 strong, would mean perfect conditions for hiding in the bunch and conserving energy. Apart from the climb every lap, which some roadies may argue is not much more than a speed hump, for former trackies like myself would prove to be the biggest hurdle to come from the day. With a very controlled start, racing commenced under ominous skies, and rolled along at quite a fast but comfortable speed. A break went away after about 6 laps, and with all major teams represented in the break, the main bunch from that point on was merely racing for placings. Another group of 6 or so, got away later in the race to finish in between the break and the main bunch. So a great ride went to Glenn Stojanow who rode away from the breakaway in the dieing stages to take victory ahead of Graeme Moffat and Anthony Spurgeon. With cramps starting to emerge with about 4 laps to go, I was then in damage control, saving as much energy as I could, while still trying to finish with the main bunch. While going over the climb coming into the finish on the last lap, my legs finally said enough was enough, and were severely screaming for me to stop the torture test I was putting them through. So a great achievement for myself to have finished another road race, on a course that I honestly didn't think I would finish on. This now gives me a lot of confidence going into the State Criterium Championships next weekend in Mudgee. Results A Grade 1 Glenn Stojanow 2 Graeme Moffat 3 Anthony Spurgeon |
