Results and Reports for April 27-28, 2002AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Canberra TourApril 26-28, 2002PrologueWomenNSW Institute of Sport rider, Natalie Bates, has won the opening prologue of the Canberra Tour. Contested as an individual time trial over 6.1km, Bates took only 8.39 minute to complete the course. She came in a slim nine seconds ahead of Emily Williams (Tas) one of the pre-race favorites, while ACT Academy of Sport rider, Oenone Wood, was a strong third, completing the course in 9.02. Canberrans Raeleigh Tennant and Liz Hickey 1.19 and 1.39 behind Natalie Bates in 12th and 15th places respectively. MenThe Men’s A-grade prologue was won by Dennis Mungoven from Canberra, in a tight finish that promises some exciting racing over the next two days. Only 13 seconds separates the top five after the opening prologue event, and Canberra cyclists have placed very strongly throughout the top places. Allen Sieper, Steve Blackburn and Peter Rogers occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th places respectively. By winning the prologue Canberra’s Dennis Mungovern has placed himself into direct contention, and Tour favourites Tom Brooks (NSW), Russell Van Hout (SA) and Rod McGee (NSW) will need to use the tough climbs in the two stages tomorrow around the Cotter and Uriarra Roads to make up the time. Coming StagesAll riders will have to change their gears for the difficult climbing stages to come over the next two days. The change from the flat, fast time trial course to steep hills will give the "mountain climbers" the edge, which is what the Canberra Tour is renowned for. For the 400+ riders, who come from all Australian States and the ACT, the weekends racing will start in earnest tomorrow morning on the first of the day’s two stages, and culminate in the longest and most difficult stage on Sunday morning, when the men and women head out past Gudgenby and back, with the men climbing the renowned Fitz’s Hill.
