Stage two of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour produced one of the fastest stages in Tour history. The 155km around Bendigo and Castlemaine was knocked over in 3 hrs 20 min 55 sec over a brilliant and challenging road-racing course. Lithuanian Dainius Kairelis, Amore & Vita, won the stage sprinting past breakaway companion, Matthew Lloyd in the final 100 metres. The pair dropped their two breakaway companions over the final climb at One-Tree Hill and sprinted the final 12 km to just hold off the charging bunch.

"I felt good today and I thought we could hold them off," an elated Kairelis said. "The Australian was strong but I was confident I could beat him in the finish."

Karl Menzies and Dominique Perras of HLP/Superstore were with the leading duo until the final climb. "I started to feel a little fatigued about 25 km to go," Perras said. "I felt like it was a bit of jet lag. But I was mostly disappointed that we had two of us in the leading four and we missed the chance."

Menzies was even more upset as he is a powerful sprinter and probably could have won the stage. "I dropped my squeegie (liquid food) about 10km before the final hill and I just didn't have anything left when Matty Lloyd put the hammer down. But he was very impressive and not just on the climbs but on the flat as well.

Baden Cooke, and his FdJ squad, looked very strong on the final run into the finish but just failed to catch the leaders. "We had to do a bit out the road and put a few guys on the front," Cooke said. "I guess we were one man short in the end and only just missed out on closing them down."

But Cooke was not happy after the finish after another close encounter with a motorbike. "In the sprint I jumped out of the last corner and there was a media motorbike again. I was doing 60 km and he was doing 40. Luckily he stayed left and I went right but it was close. I don't know if it was the same bike as yesterday but I have a sneaking suspicion it was," a fiery Cooke said.

Cooke was also unhappy about the fact that there are no time bonuses for any sprints or stage finishes. "It does make you think twice about having a sprint if it's not for a stage win. I don't think it's fair not having time bonuses. I don't remember ever racing a race with no time bonuses," Cooke said.

"In the past I reckon the Tour had too many, especially in the intermediate sprints, but it's not fair that the guy who buries himself to try and win the stage ends up with the same time as the guy who rolls in on the back in 60th place."

The Savings and Loan team continues to dominate the overall placings. Peter Mueller lost the lead when he couldn't hold the main peloton over One-Tree Hill. But team-mate Sean Sullivan has now donned the Golden Fleece. After the finish Josh Collingwood was awarded the Yellow Jersey but on revision of the tape it moved to his teammate.

"I feel real sorry for Josh but the important thing is that the team has yellow and we are looking strong," Sullivan said. "Hopefully it will be more of the same tomorrow and we can keep control of the jersey."

Collingwood was not too disappointed at getting the jersey and then having it snatched away. "Not a bad day's work for someone looking for a contract," the former world junior champion time trialist said after his unexpected success. "It was a fast first hour before the climb started. That was hard, but we were organised."
