The opening team trial stage of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour started with a bang - well crash actually. The first team out of the blocks, the highly fancied Francaise des Jeux team of favourite Baden Cooke, was brought unstuck when a media motorcycle caused a crash coming out of the halfway turn, and Tom Nankervis crashed.
"I don't know what the idiot was doing stopped in the middle of the road, but when he saw us he tried to accelerate away but we were coming too quick," an irate Baden Cooke said. "Mark Renshaw and I were on the front suddenly Mark yelled look out we dived either side of him but the motorbike moved the same way as Tom and he crashed into the back of it. I reckon it cost us at least twenty seconds. It is not a great way to start the tour," an unhappy Cooke added.

Nankervis was lucky to escape with only abrasions and he, and a couple of his team-mates who lost time, were accredited with the same time as the rest of the FdJ squad. "We sprinted out of the corner and the next thing I know there's a motorbike in front of me. I just ran in to the back of it. It's not a good way to start your first Herald Sun Tour, but I'm lucky it's only a bit of skin off," a dejected Nankervis said.
But the surprise packet of the stage was the South Australian Savings And Loans squad, which rode brilliantly to win the stage and put Peter Mueller into the first Yellow jersey. " I'm so over the moon, the guys really rode well and I can't believe I'm in yellow," an elated Mueller said.
Teammate Russell Van Hout, himself a well respected time trialist, was full of praise for the team. "We had a good warm up this morning and got all our orders right and worked out our starting orders. Then we just took off and were really smooth all the way out and everyone backed it off about three percent and kept the turns smooth, and then we picked it up on the way back and we finished fast but smooth. I still think we had a lot left," Van Hout said.

A beaming team manager Michele Primero was even more excited. "This is just fantastic for the boys. They really have put in and it's just unbelievable to get Peter into the yellow jersey," Primero said.
The highly fancied AG2R team of Simon Gerrans was only three seconds back. "The team rode really well, we went out steady and then brought it home fast," a contented Gerrans said. " But you can't help but look back at the spots you could have gained those three seconds."
Gerrans, who complained of fatigue a couple of days ago was much happier at the finish. "I feel much more refreshed after nearly a week off the bike but tomorrow will be a truer test," he said.
HLP/Superstore were third at 4.86 seconds keeping last year's runner up Dave McKenzie within striking distance. "The team rode strong and I think we will be a chance tomorrow," McKenzie said.

Cyclingnews.com finished strongly to take fifth place at 6.86 seconds behind the South Australians. But the young Aussies were not happy as they crossed the line. "I heard one of the commentators say that although we rode well, we won't be a top 10 chance overall," a determined Kane Oakley said. "We might just see about that. We have got a couple of guys who can definitely finish top ten and even get on the podium," he said with a grin.
The Japanese teams didn't fare too well with all three finishing towards the rear of the field with Shimano finished last of the eighteen teams at 21.83 seconds.
