Petacchi loses his train, Cipollini finishes stage

Yesterday on Stage 4, Fassa Bortolo and Domina Vacanze worked together to set up their sprint trains and keep Australian Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) out of the action. Accusations flew that the Italians thought the Brisbane man was a "bandit" after his switch in Stage 1's sprint. The unprecedented collaboration peeved Robbie, who told Tuttosport post-stage that "That's enough of that talk - maybe I'm not the nicest sprinter around, but I'm no bandit. No way. I've seen plenty of other riders in this Giro, and not only sprinters, take their hands off the handlebars more than once - then everyone complains how dangerous the sprints are."
Today on Stage 5's tricky finishing circuits, 32 year old McEwen showed that he's still one of the fastest and smartest sprinters in the sport. McEwen used his experience to position himself perfectly through all three of the difficult finishing circuits and Robbie took the wide open sprint with his arms akimbo in a joyous victory salute in what may be his best grand tour stage win since he won in Paris at the Tour de France in 2002. McEwen finished a wheel ahead of a fast closing Pollack, Monday's Maglia Rosa and with his 89th career win, McEwen also grabbed the Maglia Ciclamino from Alessandro Petacchi.
"It was a hard stage with three laps of the circuit with a climb and the sprint was even uphill. I'm dead!", joked McEwen with RAI-TV's Alessandro Fabretti after the stage in his improving Italian. "I'm hoping to get a 10 from Sgarbozza today," meaning that he was looking for maximum points for his win from RAI's voluble "opininista" Gigi Sgarbozza.

As for Ale-Jet, Petacchi was a factor in today's sprint until the last 500m, when he and the remaining members of his leadout train had a communication breakdown and the Fassa Bortolo man got swarmed and lost his position. "I was already pretty far back and we lost our position."
After a hard crash in yesterday's final and a tough day at the office Thursday, Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze) finished the stage and is still convinced that he can continue in the 87th Giro d'Italia. "Today was a calvary for me. After 100km, the pain-killers wore off and I was in a lot of pain. But thanks to all the support from the public, I'm determined to keep going."
How it unfolded

After some tasty Tuscan beefsteak dinners from the Val di Chiana last night after a hard, rainy Stage 4, the Giro d'Italia gruppo departed Civitella from the Del Tongo appliance factory at 12:50. After his hard crash yesterday in the final sprint, it was unclear if Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze) would start, but old lion Cipo still wanted to roar and despite his road rash and sore sides, the 37 year old rolled out with the rest of the riders.
The day was overcast and cool with a west wind, but there was no rain on the stage, which went south from Civitella Val di Chiana, along the placid shores of Lago di Trasimeno and through the beautiful Umbrian countryside. At the Intergiro in Marsciano after 104km, Fred-Rod Rodriguez led out his Acqua e Sapone teammate Crescenzo D'Amore for the time bonus ahead of Strazzer (Saunier Duval-Prodir). Just after the Intergiro, a change in road direction brought a side wind that provoked a split up front. A group of 14 riders got a gap, including Cioni (Fassa Bortolo), Murn and Albasini (Phonak), Laverde (Formaggio), Podgornik (Tenax), Bäckstedt (Alessio-Bianchi), Hamburger and Rodriguez (Acqua e Sapone), Brandt and Verbrugghe (Lotto-Domo), Mori (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Hauptman (Lampre), and Ziegler (Gerolsteiner). With 50km to race before the three 7.3km finishing circuits on the cards, Fassa Bortolo wasn't going, and Saeco didn't seem than motivated to chase down the 1'20 maximum lead.

With 45km to go, there was a split up front, with six riders continuing on as the others sat up. Hamburger, Bäckstedt, Albasini, Mori, Ziegler and Podgornik kept going, but the sprinters teams now started to chase hard, with Fassa Bortolo once again assuming the position in front.
With three laps of the finish circuit to go, the break had 30 seconds as Maglia Verde Damiano Cunego (Saeco) had to make a quick bike change at exactly the worst time. Szmyd, Stangelj and Tonti waited for Cunego, who had to chase very hard for one lap to get back into the group, but made it back. The sextet was losing ground as Fassa Bortolo and Lampre cranked up the pace behind and with two laps to go, the break was caught and it was gruppo compatto

The first lap was raced hard and Fassa Bortolo began to lose riders from their train. Moos, McGee and Marzoli attacked as the small climb on the finishing circuit began and got a 15" gap. Quaranta and then Pagliarini both dropped off the group as Cipollini managed to stay up front while McGee drove the break with strength and style, but Moos and Marzoli just didn't have the speed of the Sydneysider.
Fassa's Bruseghin tried to close the gap with 10km to go, when Lampre joined the chase, and as the bell rang for the last lap, it was gruppo compatto again. Cipollini and Jan Svorada were finally gapped on the Spoleto climb, while up front World Champ Astarloa and Cristian Moreni went on the attack, chased by Cunego and McGee. Astarloa went again, but as the descent from the centro storico of Spoleto began with 4km left, his move had been neutralized and there were still 80 riders together.

Acqua e Sapone made their train for D'Amore with 3km to go, while Tosatto and Velo tried to put Petacchi in position, but with four men left, it would be harder than usual for Ale-Jet to take off. With 1km to go, the silver train chugged into the front but something went wrong with 500m out. Tosatto sat up at the front and Petacchi came between him and the barriers on the left, bumped into Tosatto and got swarmed on the right. McEwen was in perfect position, led out in the middle of the road and took the Giro stage win, his fifth in the Italian tour.
Stage 6 - May 14: Spoleto-Valmontone, 164km
Another sprinters' stage on Friday, and although a climb at the beginning of Stage 6 could break things up a bit, the sprinters' teams should pull things together before the wide-open finish in this city 45km south of Rome.
