Score two for Petacchi
Cipollini crashes hard in finale

A crash with 75 km to go in the fourth stage did not prevent Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) from taking his second stage win of this Giro, outsprinting Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) and Simone Cadamuro (De Nardi) in a wet bunch sprint in Civitella In Val Di Chiana. Petacchi was standing up again moments after crashing on the Poggio di Sugame (110 km), but then he suddenly slumped to the ground in pain. Fortunately he was able to remount, and with the help of the entire Fassa Bortolo team, made it back to the peloton in plenty of time for Fassa to take control of the race and pilot him to the line.
One rider less fortunate than Petacchi was Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze), who was in contention until 250m to go, when his teammate Andrus Aug in front of him looked around and drifted to the left, taking out Cipo's front wheel and causing a pileup which also brought down Saeco's Andrea Tonti and Acqua e Sapone's Kyrylo Pospyeyev. Cipollini came down hard and tore skin off his shin, elbow and ankle. He was taken to hospital in Arezzo where he received 14 stitches - 10 in his shin and 4 in his elbow. It's uncertain whether he will start tomorrow.

"I did a nice sprint," said Petacchi post-stage. "I should say that I am content with how I went today. Unfortunately in the finale there was a crash which involved Cipollini and I'm sorry about this. If Mario should not start the Giro tomorrow, we would lose a certain protagonist and the glamour of our duel on the pedals. Therefore I hope with all of my heart that tomorrow he is on the road. I still haven't seen the sprint so I don't know how the crash happened; the last time I saw Cipollini was in the last kilometre and he was on my wheel. When I jumped I had no-one on my flank, I only saw the wheel of McEwen with a few metres to go.
"When I crashed during the stage I fell on my coccyx and I was in a lot of pain, then I got back on the bike and it passed. I probably touched a wheel in front. Fortunately, however, it was nothing serious."
Second placed Robbie McEwen commentd to Belgian TV after the stage that, "I had given a lot of energy already and I just wasn't strong enough to beat Petacchi. Also, I got a push in the last hundred metres. But yeah, I just didn't get into Petacchi's wheel. Before the line we actually went away from the rest, but I just couldn't get in his wheel. When I can get in his wheel for once, I might succeed, but everybody wants to be there, it's the place to be it seems.
"This type of parcours makes it easy for a lot of riders to come to the front. It's maybe better to have a parcours like the first day, with a few corners before the line."
The Maglia Rosa remained with Gilberto Simoni (Saeco), who was well protected by his teammates in today's wet and at times nervous stage.
How it unfolded

The rainy weather and the relatively flat profile of today's 184 km Tuscan stage between Porretta Terme and Civitella In Val Di Chiana saw a very subdued peloton rolling along at 33 km/h for the first 100 km. Saeco rode an easy tempo on the front, allowing a number of riders to go ahead to greet their friends and family en route, including Alessandro Petacchi and Yaroslav Popovych. Tuscany is the heart of Italian cycling, and a lot of the country's best riders come from here.
It wasn't until the second climb of the day (Poggio di Sugame) that the first serious attack came from Rafael Illiano (Colombia Selle Italia). But with other riders in search of mountain points, he was caught and passed by Alexandre Moos (Phonak), who won the climb ahead of Alessandro Vanotti (De Nardi) and Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner).
The real drama was at the back of the race, when Petacchi crashed on the lower slopes of the climb. He was attended to by teammate Marco Velo, and was standing with head bowed over his bike before he suddenly dropped to the ground again. His team car was quickly with him and helped him back on the bike and he was able to continue, albeit rather groggily. It didn't take long for the entire Fassa Bortolo team to drop back behind the peloton and pace Petacchi back onto the bunch, reaching it after 15 km of chasing.

A leading group had established itself at 55 seconds in front by this stage, with Giuseppe Muraglia (Formaggi), Alessandro Vanotti (De Nardi), Nicola Loda (Tenax), Paolo Lanfranchi (Panaria), Andoni Aranaga (Chocolade Jacques) and Mariano Piccoli (Lampre) able to open up a gap on the climb and subsequent descent. But once Petacchi was back in the peloton, Fassa Bortolo put four men on the front to ride a solid tempo, and the breakaway was caught just after the Intergiro sprint (won by Lanfranchi) with 40 km to go.
From then on it was the blue and white jerseys of Fassa Bortolo always in front, leading the peloton into Civitella In Val Di Chiana for an 11.4 km finishing circuit. As the riders turned onto a 4 km long, straight superstrada, the battle for position became intense with Fassa Bortolo trying to fend off the Lotto-Domo, Alessio-Bianchi and Domina Vacanze teams.
Petacchi was well placed behind a combined Fassa/Domina train with 2 km to go, and Mario Cipollini was up there as well, looking for a victory in front of his many Tuscan fans. After Giovanni Lombardi pulled off, Andrus Aug (Domina) and Olaf Pollack (Gerolsteiner) started the sprint together with 350m to go, but Petacchi was already threading his way to the front and hit his straps with 150m out, with only McEwen able to hold his wheel to the line.

Meanwhile Aug had pulled to the left and was looking for Cipollini. Unfortunately he looked too far and moved to the left when his team captain was right behind him, and a crash on the slippery road was inevitable. It's uncertain whether Cipollini will start in tomorrow's fifth stage, but he will no doubt try to if he is at all able.
Stage 5 - May 13: Civitella In Val Di Chiana (Stab. Del Tongo) - Spoleto, 177 Km
South from Tuscany into Umbria, Stage 5 is another classic sprinters stage in the 2004 Giro. Finishing in Spoleto, home of the world famous classical music festival, Stage 5 has three 11.3km finishing circuits to race.
