87th Giro d'Italia - Grand TourItaly, May 8-30, 2004Main Page Results Stage profile Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 19 - May 29: Bormio - Presolana, 122 kmHe's got the whole world in his hands: Cunego clinches Giro win in PresolanaGarzelli finally gets his stage winBy Tim Maloney, European Editor Today was one of those days that will go down in the history of the Giro d'Italia. With Gilberto Simoni driven by his ambition to win his third Giro d'Italia at all costs and his breakaway companion Stefano Garzelli driven to save his poor Giro with at least a stage win, last year's Giro d'Italia champion Simoni and his '03 Giro runner-up Garzelli tried to blow the race apart today by attacking 6km from summit of the brutal Mortirolo climb with 85km to go. After yesterday's harsh words from Simoni after Stage 18, the pot finally boiled over in the Saeco's Giro soap opera with Gibo attacking his Saeco teammate and Maglia Rosa Damiano Cunego today. But 22 year old Cunego just stayed calm, cool and collected and didn't panic with Simoni up the road. After Stage 19, Cunego's achievement began to sink in for real as he said, "To dream about having the Maglia Rosa is beautiful, but the reality of a Maglia Rosa is even better. Now I can touch (the Giro win) with my hands so I think it's a really great feeling." And Italian cycling great Felice Gimondi validated Cunego's win today, saying that "Cunego really rode like a leader today and never lost his head when he had to defend his Maglia Rosa." After a two-up sprint finish over Saeco's Simoni to win the hotly contested Stage 19 in Clusone, a satisfied Stefano Garzelli explained that "Until today, my Giro d'Italia hasn't been so great. But I was feeling good today and I wanted to do a good Mortirolo so I went for it. Gilberto (Simoni) and I agreed that we wanted to go for it, so we each rode our race today." After Stage 19, the man who was at the eye of today's storm Gibo Simoni explained the source of his rage yesterday, but he didn't exactly explain why he attacked Cunego today. In an elliptical, cryptic statement that at most showed his hardheaded Trentino character, Simoni explained that "Cunego won three stages (already) so the Maglia Rosa shouldn't go for the sprint...the only thing that I got mad about was he could have even risked his win because to take too many wins doesn't do anything when you are already Maglia Rosa." But Simoni's risky tactics today could have given the Giro to Serguei Gonchar had Maglia Rosa Cunego had a bad day or crashed. And in the end, since Simoni didn't manage to overtake Gonchar for second on GC nor win the stage, Simoni's 85 km attack turned out to be a total waste. Cunego's Saeco teammate Eddy Mazzoleni showed why he's considered the best gregario in the business, as he stayed right next to his Maglia Rosa teammate Damiano Cunego, even when the pot boiled over when Simoni attacked. "We were talking all day and I just told (Cunego) to stay calm and everything would be O.K. He's my roommate at the Giro and we get on well." Finishing second yesterday and fourth today, Fassa Bortolo's Dario Cioni has ended the 2004 Giro d'Italia strongly. Last year, Cioni was eliminated from the Giro d'Italia when he did his job and stayed with sprinter Petacchi on a mountain stage, finishing outside the time limit. In 2004, the modest, likeable Anglo-Italian Cioni got some liberty from his Fassa Bortolo team after working on the flat stages for super-sprinter Alessandro Petacchi. Cioni explained after Stage 19 that "I'm really happy the way things went and to have gotten to fourth place. But I'm a gregario and know my place on the team. Yaroslav Popovych (Colnago-Landbouwkredeit) rode hard today but faded on the final ascent, finishing 16th, 2'34 behind Garzelli and losing 2'26 and 4th place on GC to Cioni, who is now 0'16 ahead of the 24 year old Ukrainian, who nonetheless managed to take the Maglia Rosa for three stages. "Yeah, the first two weeks went well, but the problems I had with my preparation finally caught up with me." Popovych was stuck in a snowbound Ukraine for almost a month this January due to bureaucratic problems with his Italian visa and never built his fitness base sufficiently this season. Big Brad McGee had another hang-tough ride today as he ended up with a superb 9th place stage finish ahead of climbers Pellizotti, Belli and Garate. Once again at this year's Giro, McGee showed his class and tenacity by pedaling away on the climbs in a small gear, riding just at his red zone when he was dropped and then got back on the descents. His impressive final surge up the Passo Presolana put him in the top 10 today and secured a brilliant top 10 Giro d'Italia finish for the Sydneysider, who will finish in 8th tomorrow in Milano. How it unfoldedOn a beautiful sunny early afternoon in Bormio, which will host the 2005 World Downhill Ski Championships next January, the Giro d'Italia gruppo departed at 2:00pm. But today's stage was mostly about going uphill, with 40km of total climbing! Stage 19 was dedicated to Marco Pantani, with Cima Pantani atop the Mortirolo summit. Ten years ago, Pantani dropped everyone on the Mortirolo - including Indurain and Maglia Rosa Berzin in 1994 - to win his second consecutive Giro stage. On the 30 km downhill run to the base of the Mortirolo, Maglia Rosa Cunego flatted after 10 km, but got back in right away. After 20 km, 10 riders got away and it was a group of the usual suspects: Maglia Verde Wegmann (Gerolsteiner), Bertolini (Alessio), Mason (Vini Caldirola), Marzoli (Aqua Sapone), Sijmens (Colnago-Landbouwkrediet), Illiano (Colombia-Selle Italia), Pugaci (De Nardi), Vila (Lampre), Pozzi (Tenax) and Estonian champ Nauduzs (Domina Vacanze). Saeco's Spezialetti had a front flat at base of Mortirolo and struggled to get back to the front of the race. As the break hit the base of the Mortirolo, Illiano and Sijmens were leading up the super-steep ascent in their 39x27 at 15km/h! After 28 km, 4km from the summit of Mortirolo, Illiano led, 0'20 ahead of Wegmann, with the rest of the break at 1'00, and the gruppo Maglia Rosa at 2'30. The pace was fast, with the first hour run at 37km/h. As he did yesterday on the climb to Passo Gavia, an improving Garzelli attacked, going away halfway up the Mortirolo climb with his progressively faster pace. Surprisingly, Saeco's Simoni went with Garzelli, and was followed by Garate and Valjavec. De Nardi's Wegelius and Gonchar were chasing behind as Maglia Rosa Cunego only had Eddy Mazzoleni left to support him. After a kilometre, the Saeco soap opera pot then came to full boil, as Simoni made a hard attack and it became clear that the hardheaded Trentino was riding to win and attacking his team leader, Maglia Rosa Damiano Cunego. Back in the gruppo Maglia Rosa, Cunego and Mazzoleni were staying cool, as with 85km still to race, they couldn't afford to panic. Along with them were climbers Perez Cuapio and Sella (Panaria), the Fassa Bortolo trio of Bruseghin, Codol and Cioni, Colombian climber Laverde (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave'), Lampre leaders Belli and Garate, Yaroslav Popovych and Saunier Duval-Prodir's Zaugg, while McGee, Pellizotti and Noč' were dropped. Illiano, Wegmann, Bertolini, Sijmens, Pozzi, Marzoli, and Pugaci were still up the road ahead of the all-star counterattackers, and with 3 km to go to Cima Pantani, Simoni, Garzelli and Valjavec had gained 0'32 on the gruppo Maglia Rosa, with Garate trying to get back to them. Garzelli was having another good day and doing much of the work in his group, while Simoni was riding more on rage than rationale. Cunego was staying calm and focused as his teammate Simoni was betraying him with a strong attack on the hardest climb of the Giro d'Italia. After the brutal 12.8 km ascent of the Passo del Mortirolo at the first Cima Pantani with 80km to go, Illiano took the mountain points 0'30 ahead of Wegmann, with Bertolini at 0'40, Pugaci at 0'50, Sijmens, Pozzi and Marzoli at 1'05, with the Simoni/Garzelli group with Valjavec and Garate at 1'14, while the gruppo Maglia Rosa led by a heroic Charly Wegelius was at 2'02. On the 20km long descent down to Alta Valcamonica, Edolo and the Intergiro in Malonno, Marzoli crashed and Belli flatted, but the Acqua e Sapone man managed to get back on with the Garzelli/Simoni group. Pugaci dropped back to the gruppo Maglia Rosa. As Illiano barreled down to Edolo like a downhill skier at the front of the race, many riders like Noč', Pellizotti and McGee had gotten back on the gruppo Maglia Rosa. Approaching the Intergiro in Malonno, the Garzelli/Simoni group was 1'20 behind Illiano and 1'00 ahead of the gruppo Maglia Rosa, led by Fassa Bortolo and De Nardi. Garzelli/Simoni had absorbed Pozzi and Sijmens, and while Pozzi would work, Sijmens wouldn't in order to protect his team leader Popovych. Suddenly, the two big rivals of last year's Giro Simoni and Garzelli had become allies on the road to Presolana. But the strong wind along the statale road was making it hard to close down any of the gaps. Bertolini had used his excellent skills as a descender to get back to the front of the race and join Illiano in the break and in Malonno with 55km to go, Illiano took the time bonus and the lead in the Intergiro classification, 1'13 ahead of the Simoni/Garzelli group, while the 30-strong gruppo Maglia Rosa with De Nardi riding hard at the front at 2'11 behind. The gap between the Simoni/Garzelli group and the gruppo Maglia Rosa was staying steady at 1'00. After two hours of racing, Stage 19 headed west into the Alpi Orobie and began the ascent of the seldom climbed Passo del Vivione. In fact, today was the first time in Giro history this climb had been scaled from the west side. With almost 20 km of climbing at an average grade of 6.9%, Vivione's final 4.7 km are at 9.7% average grade. As the race headed towards the Province of Bergamo as the Vivione commenced, the Simoni/Garzelli group had absorbed the front duo, while some riders were caught between and Wegelius and Pugaci continued to pound away in pursuit at the head of the gruppo Maglia Rosa 1'15 behind. Saeco wasn't having a good day working for Cunego, as Szmyd, Tonti and Spezialetti just couldn't hold the pace and Maglia Rosa Cunego only had Eddy Mazzoleni to support him. Up front, Simoni and Garzelli had shed the dead wood and only Valjavec and Illiano were left. The Phonak rider was helping and halfway up the Vivione climb, there were just three riders left up front, as Illiano had dropped off and the gap was 1'31 to the Maglia Rosa. Simoni had now passed Gonchar on GC into second place. As the gradient of Vivione became steeper, Pugaci began to croak and slowed down on the front of the gruppo Maglia Rosa and the gap between the fugitives and Cunego's group had grown to 1'45. There were 35 km to go in Stage 19 and with Simoni 3'07 behind Cunego, there was a chance that the tough Trentino Giro champion could take over the Maglia Rosa in Presolana. Pugaci was still riding ahead of Gonchar but he peeled off with 6 km to go to the summit and the powerful Ukrainian himself took up the chase, with the Maglia Rosa on his wheel and Mazzoleni just behind. There were still 20 riders in the Cunego group, with a tenacious Bradley McGee just hanging on the back pedaling a low gear. Lele Sella (Panaria) attacked the gruppo Maglia Rosa and jumped away in pursuit of Simoni, Garzelli and Valjavec. With 3 km to go, the most difficult part of the Vivione began as the road sign marked the beginning of the Province of Bergamo. Passing through the beautiful mountain scenery near the summit of the Vivione, Simoni/Garzelli/Valjavec didn't have time to look at the dramatic waterfalls along the road, as they had 1'20 on Sella and 1'35 on Cunego's group as Gonchar had upped the pace at the front. The gruppo now contained Gonchar, Cunego, Mazzoleni, Tonkov, Garate, Belli, Popovych, Perez Cuapio, Cioni and Bruseghin. Cioni flatted and Bruseghin turned around to go back for him and paced him back to the gruppo Maglia Rosa as Brandt became the next victim of Gonchar's terrible pace. Up front, Valjavec cracked and dropped off the front as Sella continued to come up fast, while Garzelli upped the pace in the last kilometre. At the KOM of the 19.8km Passo del Vivione, it was Simoni/Garzelli in the lead, with Valjavec at 0'20, Sella at 1'20 and the gruppo Maglia Rosa at 1'50, where Cioni had another rear flat. On the narrow, fast, super-technical descent, Popovych went to the front and just dove down the 10 km as hard as he could. Belli crashed near the top but got back up as the two Fassa Bortolo riders had been gapped. Popo was totally bombing the descent and was pulling back the front riders and putting Gonchar in difficulty, while only Cunego and Mazzoleni stayed with the Ukrainian, At Schilpario halfway down the descent of the Vivione with 20 km to race, Simoni/Garzelli had been joined by Valjavec again. The three fugitives had been on the attack for 65 km, with Popovych, Maglia Rosa Cunego and Mazzoleni at 1'05. The technical descent had made a major selection, with Popovych going all out to pull back Simoni and with Gonchar, Sella, Tonkov Garate, Belli, Zaugg chasing hard behind at 1'25. With 19 km to go, the two chase groups joined and there was some confusion in the chase as to who would do what. When Popovych saw that Gonchar had come back, he stopped working but as Cioni and Bruseghin came back, they went straight to the front to chase. Brandt and Laverde also came back and the gap was now 1'25 with 15 km to go before the final ascent of the short but steep climb of Passo Presolana. At Dezzo del Scalve, the front trio had 1'30 on the chase and started the 7.9km ascent. The first three kilometres were easy, but as Garzelli was looking good, while Simoni seemed flat and Valjavec was just hanging on. As the gruppo Maglia Rosa regrouped with McGee and Pellizotti coming back, Pellizotti attacked straight away and was covered easily by Cunego. Cioni made a counter move and he and Cunego were away, while Gonchar pounded away, chasing Perez Cuapio and the Maglia Rosa. Garzelli was forcing up front, 1'00 ahead of Cunego and Cioni. Both Simoni and Garzelli were fighting hard, shoulders bobbing and feeling the effects of their long, hard break as their advantage began to drop and Gonchar, followed by Mazzoleni began to gain ground as well. Valjavec dropped off again when Garzelli upped the pace with 1.5 km to and among the huge, overenthusiastic crowds atop the Presolana, and the Caldirola man attacked Simoni in the last kilometre but couldn't shake the Trentino man. At final KOM of Stage 19 atop Passo Presolana with only 4.4 km to go, Gibo and Garzelli were still away after over 80km of liberty. Valjavec was chasing at 0'20, the Maglia Rosa and Cioni at 0'52, with Gonchar, Mazzoleni and Tonkov at 1'28. The all-star duo dove down to Clusone amid the mountain mists and at the end of their 85 km break, it was Garzelli who sprinted in for the win ahead of Gibo, his 17th career victory and fourth Giro stage win. Valjavec hung on for third at 0'23, while the surging Cioni and Maglia Rosa Cunego at 0'52, putting the Fassa Bortolo man into fourth on GC ahead of Popovych. His Saeco teammate Mazzoleni was sixth, ahead of Tonkov and Gonchar at 1'23 and despite Simoni's 0'12 time bonus, the gutsy Ukrainian managed to keep his 2nd place on GC by just 3 seconds!
